 Keeping Kentuckians Moving

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's Department of Highways plays a crucial role in maintaining and advancing the state's transportation system. With a focus on safety, accessibility, and future-oriented planning, we are committed to ensuring that Kentuckians stay connected to what matters most.

Kentucky's strategic location and comprehensive transportation network serve as the backbone of its growth. Boasting 11 interstates, eight parkways, and within a day's drive for two-thirds of the nation, Kentucky is a logistical hub that is an ideal place for businesses to flourish. Despite the name, the Department of Highways is also involved in multimodal transportation planning and collaboration with local government and private industries to ensure safe and equitable ways to move people and goods, including waterways, railroads and sidewalks.

Kentucky is segmented into 12 highway districts and the Department of Highways has a presence in all 120 counties. Each highway district is responsible for the advancement and maintenance of state-owned infrastructure in 8-11 counties.
