The Environmental Handbook is intended for use by KYTC employees who are operating Highway Maintenance and Equipment garages in Kentucky or conducting highway maintenance and operations activities on Kentucky’s roadways. The purpose of the Handbook is to aid in compliance with applicable environmental regulations and thus result in KYTC attaining the environmental goal of its Mission Statement of operating its facilities “in an environmentally sound manner”. It provides the “how to” for most common activities with a focus on environmental protection, awareness and stewardship. There is emphasis on those activities that are most likely to involve Potential Pollutants, especially those defined in the Kentucky Point Discharge Elimination System (KPDES) Storm Water Permit including: Total Suspended Solids, Oil and Grease, and Chlorides. Management, handling, distribution and disposal of common maintenance lot materials that may contain other Potential Pollutants are also described in the Handbook. Schedules for facility inspections and forms for appropriate documentation are also included. The Environmental Handbook is a work in progress. The first edition was developed in 2005 and was updated in November of 2008. An abbreviated version of the Handbook was developed for use by field personnel responsible for environmental compliance at KYTC’s facilities.
