Interstate 65 in Louisville will close between the Watterson Expressway (I-264) and downtown Louisville (Jefferson Street) from June 1- July 31 to speed progress on replacing 3 aging bridges.
The closure will save at least a year of construction restrictions, and a signed detour will be in place. Local street closures and ramp closures will also be needed.

Project Updates

May 4, 2026 - The New Construction to Extend Veterans Memorial Parkway project continues to advance with a refined design that better reflects the needs of a growing urban corridor. The project has been redesigned as an urban roadway, incorporating features that enhance safety, mobility, and multimodal access for the community.

The updated design includes a 10-foot-wide shared use path along the corridor, providing a dedicated space for pedestrians and bicyclists. The roadway section will vary throughout the project limits, transitioning between a three-lane typical section in lower-volume areas and a five-lane typical section in higher-demand segments to accommodate traffic needs efficiently.

To improve traffic operations and safety, the project will incorporate three roundabouts at key intersections:

  • Two Mile Road (KY 1923)
  • Muddy Creek Road (KY 974)
  • Irvine Road (KY 89)

In addition, a Green T intersection is planned at Boone Avenue (KY 627), which will help streamline traffic flow while maintaining access to the surrounding roadway network.

The project schedule has been updated in the recently approved 2026 Highway Plan, with funding programmed as follows:

  • Right of Way Acquisition: Fiscal Year 2027
  • Utility Relocation: Fiscal Year 2029
  • Construction: Fiscal Year 2030

This phased approach allows for continued coordination, design refinement, and stakeholder engagement as the project progresses toward construction.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet remains committed to delivering a project that improves connectivity, enhances safety, and supports long-term growth in the area. Additional updates will be provided as the project advances through each phase.
