US 60 Improvements

US 60 Location Map

Purpose and Need

The purpose of this project is to improve mobility and safety along US 60 from the east end of the bridge near Bent Brook Drive to KY 686 (Mt. Sterling Bypass) intersection. This section of highway has little or no shoulders, inadequate sight distance and no provisions of turn lanes to access the myriad businesses, facilities and neighborhoods within this project area. The proposed project calls for the widening of US 60. The goals of the US 60 widening include:

  • Improve Safety.
  • Improve Traffic Flow.
  • Improve Horizontal Curves.
  • Improve Vertical Curves.
  • Improve Turning Movements.

Project Schedule

The project team hope to have a preferred alternative selected by the end of the 2018 calendar year. Below you will find the current project scheduled dates per the current approved Highway Plan.

  • Right of Way Plans estimated in January 2021
  • Right of Way is scheduled to begin after July 2021.
  • Utility relocation is scheduled to begin after July 2021.
  • Roadway construction no earlier than July 2023.

Project Updates

December 2023 - KYTC and our design consultant, AEI, have completed the Right of Way plans.  The appraisals will begin soon.  Property owners will be contacted by independent appraisers working for KYTC in the next several months.  Once the appraisals are completed, right of way acquisitions will begin and proceed through 2024.  Utility companies will begin their relocation designs and will be moving impacted utilities over the next year.  The project construction will begin once the right-of-way and utility relocations are complete if funding has been appropriated in the highway plan.

June 2019 - After the Public Meeting was held on October 02, 2018, an internal Preliminary Line and Grade meeting was held on November 29, 2018 to discuss project alternatives along with Public Meeting comments, with various subject matter experts within the cabinet. The consultant developed an Alternative 2A, which is very similar to alternative 2, except in the urban area the vertical grades were modified and the border area outside the roadway was reduced to 4', which minimize the need for new ditches behind the curb and gutter, which reduces the right-of-way impacts in the urban area. Alternative 2A has less Right-of-Way and Utility impacts than Alternates 1 and 2. Based on the survey from the public meeting, most responses did not see a need for constructing sidewalks with the project.  Alternative 2A would not allow for constructing sidewalks with the project.

The Design Executive Summary was approved in Central Office on April 29, 2019, which recommends Alternative 2A for further development, as funds are available.

Currently, the KYTC Geotechnical Branch is in the process of preparing a drilling plan and scheduling a time to go to the project area and provide coring information along the corridor to get a better idea of what type of existing subsurface material is in the corridor. Once this information has been gathered and provided, and funding is available, the consultant will begin the detailed design for the project.

Public Information Meeting

A public meeting was held on October 2, 2018.  The purpose of that meeting was to inform the public of the project and present some different alternative that the Cabinet is currently exploring. Below you will find PDF copies of the displays and hand outs that were available at this meeting.
