*A two-mile section of southbound I-65 reopened to two lanes of traffic on Sunday, June 29, from University Boulevard on.

I-65 North and South remains closed from downtown Louisville (Jefferson Street) to University Boulevard through Friday, July 31.
Following the closure, I-65 will be open to two lanes in each direction as contract crews continue construction through late 2027.

THROUGH TRAFFIC

  • The signed detour is to I-264 (Georgia Davis Powers Expressway) on the west side of Louisville.
  • The signed detour is the shortest distance, utilizes roadways with the most capacity, and creates the least traffic impacts.
  • The route takes through traffic around the closure, minimizing impacts to local traffic.

LOCAL TRAFFIC

  • Local detours include many different beginning and end points.
  • Mapping apps will help drivers find the best route at their time of travel.
  • The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is an Agency Partner with Waze, a free GPS navigation app with real-time traffic updates.

DOWNTOWN ACCESS

  • Downtown is accessed via the Jefferson Street exit from southbound I-65.
  • Traffic leaving downtown can use the East Liberty ramp to access northbound I-65, I-64 and I-71.
  • I-64 ramps at Third Street and Ninth Street also provide access to and from downtown.

U.S. 31E (Main Street)
*Main Remade*

TRAFFIC ADVISORY:
Contract crews will complete permanent pavement striping on the north side of U.S. 31E (Main Street) beginning the week of Monday, July 6. Once the striping is complete, traffic will be shifted to the north side of the roadway in its permanent configuration.

After traffic has been shifted, most intersections along the corridor will temporarily operate as all-way stops using stop signs while crews transfer power to the new traffic signals and remove the existing signal equipment. The intersections of Second Street at Main Street and Second Street at Market Street will remain signalized during this phase.

Contract crews will then complete the remaining permanent striping on the south side of U.S. 31E (Main Street). Although all pavement markings will be in place at that point, traffic control devices will continue to prohibit eastbound traffic until the new traffic signals have been energized.

Once power has been connected to all new traffic signals, U.S. 31E (Main Street) will open to its new two-way traffic configuration. The anticipated completion of this work is by the end of July, weather permitting.

Motorists should expect changing traffic patterns throughout this work. Drivers are encouraged to follow posted signage, obey temporary traffic control devices and stop signs, and allow extra travel time through the work zone.
