KY 490 Safety Improvements
Laurel County
Closure Alternate
Location Map
Reroute #1
Reroute #2
Project Background
The purpose of this project is to improve safety along KY 490
from milepoint 3.012 to milepoint 8.202.
This corridor was identified as having a greater number of crashes than
would have otherwise been expected for a similar type of highway with similar
levels of traffic. Various corridor-wide
improvements and spot improvements are being proposed to address these safety
concerns. Some of the corridor-wide
improvements include widening shoulders and improving roadway geometrics. Some of the proposed spot improvements
include addressing the Y-intersection of KY 490 and KY 1228 as well as the
Y-intersection of KY 490 and KY 3434.
KY 490 / KY 3434 Intersection
The current intersection of KY 490 and KY 3434 is a
Y-intersection. Where traditional
T-shaped intersections require vehicles to slow down or stop before making a
turning movement, Y-intersections allow vehicles to make these movements at
higher speeds, which can lead to an increase in the number of crashes and the
severity of the crashes. A proposed
solution to this problem is to close the intersection of KY 490 and KY 3434 and
divert traffic to a different route.
Alternate Routes
Option #1 – KY 1376
For a vehicle traveling south on KY 490, instead of making a
left on KY 3434, it would continue south on KY 490 for approximately 0.6 miles,
where it would take a left on KY 1376.
It would continue on KY 1376 for approximately 0.3 miles to the
intersection of KY 1376 and KY 3434. The
total length of this re-route is approximately 0.9 miles long. This is approximately 0.3 miles longer than
the current direct route.
Option #2 – KY 3094
For a vehicle traveling south on KY 490, instead of making a
left on KY 3434, it would continue south on KY 490 for approximately 1.9 miles,
where it would take a left on KY 3094.
It would continue on KY 3094 for approximately 0.6 miles to the
intersection of KY 3094 and KY 3434. The
total length of this re-route is approximately 2.5 miles long. This is approximately 0.9 miles longer than
the current direct route.
