KY 36 Bath County Safety Project

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet engineers and consultants are proposing highway safety improvements along several miles of KY 36 in Bath County east of Owingsville -- from the I-64 interchange to Hart Pike (KY 965). The proposed project stemmed from a previous planning study that identified changes to the geometry, condition, and intersections of the highway.

 Purpose & Need

In 2022, the Transportation Cabinet completed a Planning Study for KY 36. The study identified the following Purpose & Need:

The purpose of this project is to address the current deficiencies, improve safety, and promote access and connectivity for this region of Bath County. Proposed changes include plans to reduce sharp curves along the roadway, such as at Slate Creek Furnace and Thomas Hill curves and elsewhere, as well as widening driving lanes and shoulders, and changes at intersections to improve sight distance.

 2021-2022 KY 36 Planning Study

In 2021, engineers began a study to develop and evaluate conceptual improvements to improve safety and connectivity on the KY 36 corridor from I-64 to KY 965 (Hart Pike) in Bath County.  It included an inventory of conditions as well as meetings with local officials and stakeholders. A public survey of needs and ideas started in December 2021, which was followed by identification of improvement concepts and recommendations.

You can now view the final reports from the 2021-2022 KY 36 Planning Study on the KYTC Division of Planning web page. It includes identified needs and recommendations, which led to the KY 36 Safety Project currently under way.
