Transportation Cabinet Expediting Removal of Closed Broadway Bridge in Frankfort to Ensure Public Safety and Take Steps to Reopen River Traffic
Purpose

The study's original purpose was to implement a long-term solution to address deteriorating structural conditions and safety concerns for pedestrians and boaters who travel beneath the structure. *Please see press releases for project status*

Project Scope

W. Broadway Bridge (KY 3506) over the Kentucky River

Type of Project

The bridge has been closed to vehicular traffic since 1993 and was later closed to pedestrians. A Bridge Conversion Feasibility Study of Broadway Street (KY 3506) over the Kentucky River was completed in August 2019 and concluded that the bridge is in “imminent" failure condition with a rating of 1 out of 9 according to the Federal Highway Administration's rating guidelines. The rating reflects the major deterioration and section loss on major structural components and the fact that the bridge is currently closed.

Potential Alternatives

Due to debris falling from the structure, the bridge poses safety concerns for pedestrians in Kentucky River View Park on Riverview Trail and boaters on the Kentucky River. It is also a hazard to anyone who might ignore the barricades at each end and walk onto the deck. Variations of two options have been explored to address these safety hazards:

  • Demolish the bridge
  • Rehabilitate the bridge and convert it to a multi-use path

  • Demolish the bridge and construct a new bridge for a multi-use path

Project Timeline

State highway engineers are expediting a demolition project to remove the bridge's approach spans near the shoreline and the main truss span over the river.

*Please see press release*

The Kentucky River in Frankfort and part of River View Park at the old Broadway Bridge remain closed as a safety precaution while the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet works to expedite the removal of the aging structure, which has been closed to vehicles and pedestrians since 1993 to eliminate hazards to boat and pedestrian traffic.

Public Input

A virtual public meeting was held on October 27, 2020, to provide the public with an overview of the project and an opportunity to provide comments that could be considered during further project development.

An in-person public meeting was held on November 16, 2023, to provide the public with information on alternatives being considered and to collect feedback from citizens. Public meeting press release

A review of historic properties in the area was conducted. A copy of the Area of Potential Effect for historic properties is Available Here or provided in the links above.
