Franklin County: West Broadway Bridge - Project 05-805

broadway bridge.PNG

Purpose
Implement a long-term solution to address deteriorating structural conditions, as well as safety concerns for pedestrians and boaters who travel beneath the structure.
Project Scope
W. Broadway Bridge (KY 3506) over the Kentucky River
Type of Project

The bridge has been closed to vehicular traffic since 1993 and was later closed to pedestrians. A Bridge Conversion Feasibility Study Broadway Street (KY 3506) over the Kentucky River was completed in August 2019 and concluded that the bridge is in “imminent” failure condition with a rating of 1 out of 9 according to the Federal Highway Administration’s rating guidelines. The rating reflects the major deterioration and section loss on major structural components, as well as the fact that the bridge is currently closed.

Potential Alternatives
Due to debris falling from the structure, the bridge currently poses safety concerns for pedestrians in Kentucky River View Park on Riverview Trail and boaters on the Kentucky River. It is also a hazard to anyone who might ignore the barricades at each end and walk onto the deck. Variations of two options have been explored to address these safety hazards:
  • Demolish the bridge
  • Rehabilitate the bridge and convert it to a multi-use path
  • Construct a new bridge for a multi-use path
