Lane Reduction on U.S. 31E in Jefferson County
Right lane closed for bridge repair

LOUISVILLE, KY (Feb. 25, 2021) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) advises motorists of a lane reduction on U.S. 31E (Buechel Bypass) in Jefferson County. The right lane of the roadway is closed over the Norfolk Southern Railroad (mile marker 10.4) after KYTC bridge engineers observed deterioration on one of the pier caps of the bridge during a recent routine inspection.

The lane closure will restrict loads from the affected side of the bridge and will reduce the chance of further wear on the structure. KYTC staff are evaluating repair options for this location. The lane closure will remain in place until restoration work can be performed. This bridge carries an average of 29,000 vehicles per day.

Interstate Ramp Improvements in Jefferson County to Begin August 14
Ramps will be closed for striping work

LOUISVILLE, KY (August 6, 2020) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) advises motorists of ramp improvements taking place in downtown Louisville next week. Multiple interstate ramps will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday, August 14 until 5 a.m. Monday, August 17.

Ramps to be closed include:

  • I-64 West to I-65 South
  • I-64 West to I-65 North
  • I-71 South to I-65 North
  • Story Ave to I-65 North & South
  • Story Ave to I-64 West

Closure of the ramps is necessary to perform signing & pavement marking modifications in the area locally known as "Spaghetti Junction." These modifications are to better align with traffic volumes and will remove an undesired merge from I-71 South to I-65 North, which should allow traffic to flow more efficiently. While the ramps are closed, overhead signs will be installed to supplement the revised markings. All of the existing striping on the closed ramps will also be updated and refreshed.

Following the opening of the ramps, I-64 West traffic accessing I-65 is advised to take note of the new overhead panel signs and lane markings to ensure they are in the correct lane for I-65 North and South. Following the modifications, the left lane will become an exit only to I-65 South (Nashville), and the right lane will become a single lane accessing I-65 North (Indianapolis).

During the ramp closures, signed detours will be in place at I-264 for both I-71 South and I-64 West, directing drivers to connect with I-65 near the airport via I-264 West. Story Ave traffic can follow the signed detour to Main Street and then Preston Street for I-65 North & I-64 West or First Street for I-65 South. Drivers are encouraged to follow the message boards and signed detour, or seek an alternate route. Motorists should anticipate slowed or stopped traffic and possible delays in the area of the closures and detour routes.

Contract Awarded for Repair Work of I-265 West Ramp in Jefferson County

Exit from KY 61 closed until repairs are made

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (June 10, 2020) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 5 Office advises the public of the awarding of a contract for repair work on the ramp from KY 61 (Preston Highway) to I-265 West (Gene Snyder Freeway) in Jefferson County. The ramp was closed last month after advanced pier deterioration was found during a routine inspection. The repair work will be performed as part of a new master agreement with Jave LLC of Lexington.

Jave LLC will design the temporary support system and perform the pier repair, as well as coordinate the manufacturing of the bearing replacement needed for the work. New customized bearings for the bridge must be fabricated in off-site facilities, however manufacturing may be prolonged due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After materials are completed and delivered, on-site work will begin. It is anticipated that on-site work should begin in 10-12 weeks. It is estimated that all repairs should be complete by Early October 2020. Motorists in the area of the bridge may see workers on site intermittently prior to on-site work beginning.

Drivers can continue to take the following detour:

KY 61 North (Preston Highway) to I-265 East to Smyrna Road (Exit 14) to reconnect with I-265 West

The date and duration of this work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur.
