KY 53 Widening Project Scheduled to Begin in Shelby County
Work set to start next week

LOUISVILLE, KY (Sept. 10, 2020) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) advises motorists of the beginning of a project to widen a portion of KY 53 (Mt. Eden Road) in Shelby County. Work is scheduled to start during the week of September 14. As part of the project, the road will be widened from St. Regis Drive (mile marker 6.4) to U.S. 60 (mile marker 8). The new configuration will have two lanes of traffic in each direction with turning lanes and a raised median.

In addition, a shared-use path will be added to the eastbound side of the project. Secondary access roads will also be created for easier accessibility to local neighborhoods and businesses.

"We are pleased to begin work on this much-anticipated project," said Chief District Engineer Matt Bullock. "The widening of KY 53 will support the continued growth of Shelbyville and Shelby County. This project will not only reduce congestion and improve safety, but it will also provide drivers with a smoother ride on this vital corridor."

Work will take place on the northbound side of the project first. Two lanes of traffic will remain open to motorists during the duration of the widening. Louisville Paving & Construction was awarded the contract in August in the amount of $14,264,000. The project is scheduled to be complete in the fall of 2022.

Interstate Ramp Improvements in Jefferson County to Begin August 14
Ramps will be closed for striping work

LOUISVILLE, KY (August 6, 2020) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) advises motorists of ramp improvements taking place in downtown Louisville next week. Multiple interstate ramps will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday, August 14 until 5 a.m. Monday, August 17.

Ramps to be closed include:

  • I-64 West to I-65 South
  • I-64 West to I-65 North
  • I-71 South to I-65 North
  • Story Ave to I-65 North & South
  • Story Ave to I-64 West

Closure of the ramps is necessary to perform signing & pavement marking modifications in the area locally known as "Spaghetti Junction." These modifications are to better align with traffic volumes and will remove an undesired merge from I-71 South to I-65 North, which should allow traffic to flow more efficiently. While the ramps are closed, overhead signs will be installed to supplement the revised markings. All of the existing striping on the closed ramps will also be updated and refreshed.

Following the opening of the ramps, I-64 West traffic accessing I-65 is advised to take note of the new overhead panel signs and lane markings to ensure they are in the correct lane for I-65 North and South. Following the modifications, the left lane will become an exit only to I-65 South (Nashville), and the right lane will become a single lane accessing I-65 North (Indianapolis).

During the ramp closures, signed detours will be in place at I-264 for both I-71 South and I-64 West, directing drivers to connect with I-65 near the airport via I-264 West. Story Ave traffic can follow the signed detour to Main Street and then Preston Street for I-65 North & I-64 West or First Street for I-65 South. Drivers are encouraged to follow the message boards and signed detour, or seek an alternate route. Motorists should anticipate slowed or stopped traffic and possible delays in the area of the closures and detour routes.

Motorists will be detoured via I-264 West to Taylorsville Road South (Exit 17A), where they can turn left at the bottom of the ramp, access I-264 East and proceed to Breckenridge Lane North.

Also, the exit ramp from I-264 West to Breckenridge Lane South (Exit 18A) will be closed at 8 p.m. on Friday, August 2. This ramp will be closed for nine days to allow for the construction of an auxiliary lane on I-264 West between I-64 and Taylorsville Road. The ramp is scheduled to reopen by 5 a.m. on Monday, August 12. A signed detour will be in place via I-264 West to Taylorsville Road South (Exit 17A) to I-264 East where motorists can then access Breckenridge Lane South.

This work is part of a project for improvements to interchanges on I-264 at I-64 and Breckenridge Lane. Work began in June 2018 and is scheduled for completion in November 2019.

Hall Contracting of Kentucky Inc. was awarded this contract for $9.7 million.

Traffic Pattern Change on New Dixie Highway Project

Median work to begin from I-264 to Crums Lane

LOUISVILLE (July 18, 2019) – Crews on The New Dixie Highway Project have completed construction of drainage structures, curbs, gutters and wider sidewalks between Herbert Avenue and Crums Lane. The next phase of work for this area begins tomorrow with the installation of concrete medians.

Beginning Friday, July 19, the left lanes of Dixie Highway will be closed in each direction between Interstate 264 (Watterson Expressway) and Crums Lane. This change in traffic pattern will continue for approximately three weeks. Left turn access for motorists will be maintained at Garrs Lane.

Also, the exit ramp from I-264 West to Dixie Highway (Exit 8B) will be reduced to one lane during the median construction.

By installing medians, The New Dixie Highway Project will restrict mid-block left turns – and guide drivers to turn at signalized intersections or designated U-turn points.  Installing medians is both the most transformative part of The New Dixie Highway project – but also the most dangerous for workers because they will be working in the middle of the roadway with traffic on both sides.

"Safety is our first priority, and in the long run, medians will prevent accidents," said John Callihan, project manager of The New Dixie Highway Project. "But in the short-term, this is a dangerous part of the construction process and we ask for extra vigilance from drivers during this phase of the project."

Median installation is happening at a couple of locations along the project corridor. The interior lanes immediately adjacent to the work are closed in each direction. As one section is complete, crews will move to a new section, meaning that drivers should stay alert as lane closures may change without notice.

Medians will be "non-mountable" so passenger vehicles cannot drive over them. Widths will vary with available space, with landscaping at key locations. While it may seem counter-intuitive to drivers, restricting mid-block left-turns creates not only a safer corridor, but a more efficient corridor. Some drivers will have to drive slightly further to reach their destination, but the improved efficiency and reduction in accident-related congestion will mean a better traffic flow for everyone.

The New Dixie Highway Project broke ground in December of 2017 and all the major components will be complete in December 2019. Some final parts of project – such as landscaping and final surfacing – require warm weather and will be completed in the summer of 2020.

About the New Dixie Highway Project

The New Dixie Highway Project is a $35 million investment to improve safety, mobility and livability along the corridor.  The project will concentrate on three major areas of improvement:

  • Roadway safety and design improvements, including raised medians and left-hand-only turn lanes along the most congested and dangerous section (Crums Lane to Greenwood Road).

  • A new Intelligent Transportation System that will improve and coordinate traffic signal timing along the entire corridor.

  • The region's first TARC bus rapid transit route, with eight priority buses and 37 highly visible bus stations and stops that will improve travel times for both transit riders and drivers.
