Interstate 65 in Louisville will close between the Watterson Expressway (I-264) and downtown Louisville (Jefferson Street) from June 1- July 31 to speed progress on replacing 3 aging bridges.
The closure will save at least a year of construction restrictions, and a signed detour will be in place. Local street closures and ramp closures will also be needed.

Jefferson County: KY 155 (Taylorsville Road) Safety Improvement Project at South Pope Lick Road - Project 05-808

ky 155 safety improvement.png

Purpose

The project will provide for the re-alignment of South Pope Lick Road, a new wider bridge that will accommodate the future widening project from I-265 to KY 148, the addition of turning lanes on KY 155, drainage in the area will be improved, and erosion will be minimized with the improvements to the roadways.  This project will provide much-needed significant safety improvements and improve the intersection's sight distance.

Also, the metal grate multi-use path will be replaced in the same approximate location with a wider, safer, concrete walkway and appropriately sized hand railing. This project will be a significant improvement for park-goers and commuters alike in this area of the City of Louisville.

Project Scope
KY 155 Safety Improvement Project - Reconstruction of Taylorsville Road and the South Pope Lick Road Intersection and Bridge over Pope Lick Creek

Type of ProjectReplacing the existing KY 155 -Taylorsville Road bridge (structurally deficient) over Pope Lick Creek with a wider structure that will provide turn lanes at the South Pope Lick Road intersection. This will improve the current traffic operations and safety of the intersection since the north side of South Pope Lick Road will be realigned with the south side of South Pope Lick Road.

The "Louisville Loop" multi-use path also goes under KY 155 where it is a metal grate that is cantilevered off the east abutment. The metal grate multi-use path will be replaced in the same approximate location with a wider, safer, concrete walkway and appropriately sized hand railing.

The bridge will be replaced with a structure that will accommodate the future widening project 05-8908, which consists of the widening of KY 155 (Taylorsville Road) about 300 feet to the east of KY 2265 (Hatmaker Trail) and proceeds to the west. Even though KY 155 is a north and south route, it swings due east and west over the project limits.  Construction terminates on KY 155, just near Old Taylorsville Road.

Typical Section
The project’s typical sections can be seen below for KY 155.  KY 155 will have two 12-foot travel lanes and offset left turn lanes at the South Pope Lick Road intersection.  Eastbound KY 155 will also have a dedicated right turn lane onto South Pope Lick Road.  Also, there will be raised 5’ sidewalks on both sides of the bridge to accommodate pedestrians traveling north or south to the Louisville Loop, parks, and recreation in the area. South Pope Lick Road will have two 12 feet travel lanes.
