When winter weather strikes, KYTC District 7 highway maintenance crews and contractors work to keep state highways safe and passable for travelers within our area's 12 counties: AndersonBourbonBoyleClarkFayetteGarrardJessamineMadisonMercerMontgomeryScott, and Woodford.

District 7 has over 60 snow plows and 91 contractors who maintain 5,658 miles.

When weather conditions allow, crews may apply anti-icing materials to roads ahead of anticipated snow.

Priority Routes

Our mission is to keep traffic moving safely with an emphasis on maintaining mobility along critical state-maintained corridors and priority routes during winter weather events. Snow removal is based on a four-tier priority route system that considered traffic volume and roadway access to critical needs, like hospitals.

Priority IP: Interstates and Parkway

Priority A: Major routes with the highest traffic volume. While all roads are treated during a winter storm, these receive top priority with a goal of two-hour turnaround during a routine winter storm.

Priority B: Highways that are not as heavily traveled as 'A' routes, are treated next. All Priority B routes should be completely treated during a routine winter storm with a goal of a four-hour turnaround.

Priority C: Mainly rural and other low-volume routes are third on the list. The cabinet's goal is to treat Priority C routes within 16 hours of the beginning of a routine snow event. Based on the storm conditions crews may refrain from winter maintenance activity along C routes in overnight hours.

*Turnaround timeframes are based upon a routine winter storm. Times may vary during an emergency event.
