What is a Queue?
A queue is the traffic backup or line of vehicles that is slowed or stopped due to a construction zone, crash, or road hazard.
This program aims to warn motorists that traffic has stopped ahead and
BE PREPARED TO STOP
. Queues present an increased risk to motorists and workers because of the difference in speed between approaching moving traffic and the traffic that has stopped within the work zone. Queues increase the risk of secondary crashes – crashes that occur within the queue (backup) that resulted from an original incident. The result can be a domino effect of crashes. These are often more hazardous than the initial incident. One way to reduce the risk of secondary crashes is by placing special vehicles ahead of stopped traffic to alert motorists to
BE PREPARED TO STOP
.
On select contracts, KYTC will provide queue trucks about a ¼ mile before the traffic jam to alert motorists to
BE PREPARED TO STOP
. Warning lights will emphasize the
BE PREPARED TO STOP
message when queue trucks are actively providing advanced queue awareness. A second queue truck will be used to “leap-frog” the first queue truck as the traffic jam grows longer.
These trucks are one of many ways the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is making work zones safer through advanced warning systems.
