Kentucky’s 20-year transportation plan up for review
Public can review, make comments May 7-June 23
FRANKFORT, Ky. – Kentucky’s transportation plans and goals for the next 20 years are ready for public review.
The draft 2014 Long-Range Statewide Transportation Plan, developed with the aid of more than 16,000 public survey responses, is an overarching policy guide with goals, objectives and strategies to address the core transportation opportunities and challenges facing Kentucky. When final, it will serve as a resource for multiple organizations, policymakers and communities that will have a stake in leading Kentucky’s transportation system into the future.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) adopted a long-range plan in 2006. The 2014 draft updates that plan to give direction for addressing, within funding limitations, major issues and obstacles the cabinet may face through 2035.
The draft plan’s goals for the state include:
· Greater emphasis on investments that last longer and therefore cost less
· Use of emerging technologies to improve operation and state of good repair
· Responsiveness to the needs of a growing population that will be older, more urban, and more diverse
· Steadily increasing highway safety, as reflected in a trend of decreasing traffic fatalities
· Innovation in raising revenues across all modes of transportation

While transportation systems are never “completed,” they function more effectively when adequate investment is made to continuously develop and maintain the system. For safe and efficient travel to continue over the next 20 years and beyond requires efficient use of all KYTC resources to support the critical publicly owned elements of the transportation system and close working partnerships with private sector owners of rail, aviation and waterways.
The 2014 draft plan also lists goals that will be used to measure the effectiveness of proposed system improvements:
· Providing a safe and secure system
· Continuous maintenance and improvement of existing infrastructure
· Ensuring dependable, effective and efficient facilities
· Improving local, regional and global connectivity and access
· Including all appropriate modes of transportation within a fully-integrated system
The public review process for the draft plan will continue through June 23, allowing plenty of time for comments.

Anyone can provide comments
on the draft plan through participation in a short survey available at: http://yourturn.transportation.ky.gov or by paper copy at locations where hard copies of the draft plan can be viewed.
Information collected from the survey will be used in development of the FINAL “Kentucky’s Long-Range Statewide Transportation Plan: Planning to Make a Difference in America’s Tomorrow: 2014-2035.”
