Elliott County Fiscal Court awarded $384,000 in discretionary funds for critical pavement improvements
Resurfacing repairs to be made to four miles of roadway

FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. (Aug. 22, 2019) – During Tuesday's Elliott County Fiscal Court meeting, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) Department of Rural and Municipal Aid Commissioner Gray Tomblyn II announced $384,000 in discretionary funds for vital resurfacing work on Beartown Ridge and Blaine Trace. Resurfacing repairs address existing surface cracks, potholes, raveling, and base failures. The investment supports Governor Matt Bevin's commitment to prioritize transportation infrastructure projects and increase economic opportunity across the Commonwealth.

"The Bevin Administration continues to focus on taking care of what we have at both the state and local level to address critical infrastructure needs that improve safety and support job creation and retention," said KYTC Secretary Greg Thomas. "This funding builds upon existing transportation investments and allows the Cabinet to collaborate with local governments to identify projects that will have a large impact in communities."

Elliot County Judge-Executive Myron Lewis identified these roads as being among the most critical in the county.

"The Elliott County Fiscal Court, on behalf of its citizens, want to extend a big thank you to Commissioner Tomblyn for making the trip to Sandy Hook and presenting us with these funds for road improvement," said Judge-Executive Lewis. "The roads which will be upgraded are in dire need as they have not been resurfaced in over ten years. The citizens have been more than patient in their daily travels while awaiting assistance and we thank them. We very much appreciate the hard work from all involved in making these funds available."

Projects submitted to the Department of Rural and Municipal Aid for discretionary fund consideration were evaluated by the KYTC district staff to assess the condition of roads and determine the most critical needs based on factors such as safety, economic impact, and traffic volumes.

"I'm so pleased that Governor Bevin and the Transportation Cabinet have so generously provided needed paving funds for Elliott County," said Sen. Phillip Wheeler. "Investing in our rural counties like Elliott is essential for improving the quality of life for the entire Commonwealth. I know that Judge Myron Lewis and the members of the Elliott County Fiscal Court will ensure that these funds are well-spent."

The Elliott County Fiscal Court is responsible for administering the work, and KYTC will reimburse the county for the projects.

"These discretionary funds awarded to Elliott County are badly needed, especially at a time when county budgets are severely stressed," said Rep. Rocky Adkins. "Congratulations to Judge Myron Lewis and the fiscal court. I know they will put these funds to good use."

Resurfacing work will address:

  • Beartown Ridge (County Road 1345) — resurfacing 2.0 miles
  • Blaine Trace (County Road 1014) — resurfacing 2.17  miles
