Carter County Fiscal Court awarded $484,237 in discretionary funds for critical pavement improvements
Resurfacing repairs to be made to 14 area roads

FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. (April 8, 2019) – During Monday's Carter County Fiscal Court meeting, Department of Rural and Municipal Aid Commissioner Gray Tomblyn II announced $484,237 in discretionary funds for vital resurfacing work to 14 county roads. Resurfacing repairs address existing surface cracks, potholes, rutting, crumbling shoulders and base failures. The nearly half a million dollar investment supports Governor Matt Bevin's commitment to prioritize transportation infrastructure projects and increase economic opportunity across the Commonwealth.

"The Bevin Administration continues to focus on taking care of what we have at both the state and local level to address critical infrastructure needs that improve safety and support job creation and retention," said Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Secretary Greg Thomas. "This funding builds upon existing transportation investments and allows the Cabinet to collaborate with local governments to identify projects that will have large impacts to communities."

These roads were identified as being among the most critical in the county due to deterioration.

Carter County Judge-Executive Mike Malone welcomed the funding announcement.

"On behalf of the Carter County Fiscal Court, it is hard to find words to describe how pleased we are with the funding the Governor and the Transportation Cabinet has awarded to Carter County," Malone said. "It is indeed Christmas in Spring for our folks and our roads that need it so badly."

Collectively, the roads provide access to 161 homes and businesses in the area. These connector roads provide important links for school buses, prospective economic development businesses and recreation.

"The wear and tear from normal usage, compounded with erosion from excessive rain, has taken its toll on the roads in Carter County," said Sen. Robin Webb. "I appreciate the Governor seeing our need and earmarking discretionary funds for resurfacing. Having properly maintained infrastructure is essential to the safety of our community."

Rep. Kathy Hinkle echoed appreciation for the impact the funds will have for residents.

"I am excited to hear about the road resurfacing project in Carter County. This will be a big step forward for the community and all its visitors," said Rep. Hinkle.

The Carter County Fiscal Court is responsible for administering the work, and KYTC will reimburse the county for the projects.
