Traffic Advisory: KY 1 paving in Greenup County starts Thursday, Sept. 6
Watch for one-lane traffic with flaggers

FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. (Aug. 31, 2018) – Contractors will begin paving nearly 5 miles of KY 1 in Greenup County next week.

Weather permitting, paving is expected to start Thursday, Sept. 6, on KY 1 from just south of the KY 207 intersection at Argillite north to US 23 at Greenup, between mile markers 12 and 17.

Paving work will use a new scrub seal technique that begins with a layer of sealant over which a layer of small limestone chips are spread. Work will require one-lane traffic, controlled by flaggers.

While the chip layer is curing, traffic will be allowed back on the treated lane. However, motorists should remember they won't be on the final driving surface, and should drive with caution due to the potential for loose limestone chips on the highway. A reduced speed limit will be in effect.

Once that initial chip layer is complete, the roadway must cure under traffic for several days – likely through Sept. 10, depending upon weather. Again, please follow posted speed limits and drive with caution. Then, contractors will apply a very thin blacktop layer over the chip layer to create the final driving surface.

Until construction is complete, please heed all warning signs, leave space between vehicles for adequate braking or maneuvering, and remain aware of workers and construction equipment at all times.

Work is being done under a Transportation Cabinet low-bid contract awarded to Mountain Enterprises Inc. for $349,784.40.
