KY 5 to close at Hoods Creek for bridge replacement
July 23-27, possibly longer

FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. (July 19, 2018) – State highway crews will close part of KY 5 near Bellefonte in Boyd County next week to replace an aging bridge.

Beginning about 11 a.m. Monday, July 23, crews will close KY 5 where it crosses Hoods Creek at milepoint 8.7 just south of Lowe Gehringer Road and a tenth of a mile north of Old Buckley Road. Over several days, crews will remove the old concrete and steel bridge and install a new aluminum arch culvert, during which time the road will be closed day and night.

Bridge work and rebuilding of the road will take place through Friday, July 27, or possibly into the weekend depending upon weather. The road will remain closed until work is complete. Detour information:

  • During construction, motorists may use KY 5 from the Bellefonte area to access locations up to Lowe Gehringer Road. To reach Old Buckley Road and locations south of the bridge, motorists should reroute through Westwood or Ashland using US 60, and either KY 766 (Donta Road) or KY 716 (Summitt Road).
  • All through traffic on KY 5 – for example, motorists connecting from US 23 or Indian Run Road (KY 1458) to US 60 at Princess – should detour via KY 168, US 60, KY 766 or KY 716 or seek alternate routes during the week.
  • Message boards on KY 5 will be used to communicate closure information and schedule changes.

Replacement of the Hoods Creek bridge, which is old and in disrepair, is important to maintaining the efficient and safe flow of traffic on KY 5 in Boyd County. Work is being done now to avoid disruption to school traffic, and to complete the work prior to paving planned for this summer.

Road work schedules are subject to change depending on weather conditions. Motorists are asked to heed all warning signs, slow down in work zones and remain aware of workers and construction equipment when traveling.
