Trimble County: U.S. 421 Turn Lanes into Trimble County High School Project - 05 8712

Purpose	Improve safety along U.S. 421 by adding turn lanes into Trimble County High School.
Type of Project	Construct a northbound left turn lane on US 421 to allow for turning vehicles into the Trimble County High School entrances. A left turn lane is being added for northbound traffic to facilitate the turning movement into the school, but it is being extended all the way to the U.S. 421/KY 625 intersection. That intersection provides a more logical terminus. Based on traffic counts gathered during the preliminary design phase, a left turn lane is warranted for vehicles turning onto KY 625 from U.S. 421. Selected Alternative #2: Due to right of way and utility impacts, it was decided to widen to the west side of U.S. 421 only. US 421 will taper from 2-11' through lanes to 2-11' through lanes and a 12' left turn lane within the project area. *From Alternatives below
Project Timeline	As of Winter 2023/2024: Overhead utility relocations began in April 2023 and were completed in August 2023. KYTC has acquired all necessary right-of-way for the project. KYTC let the project to construction in September 2023. Construction is currently ongoing, and KYTC anticipates the majority of the road widening construction to be completed during the Summer of 2024 when school is not in session.
Non-selected alternatives	During the preliminary design process, KYTC reviewed three widening alternatives for adding a turn lane: Widen to the east side of US 421 Widen to the west side of US421 Widen to both sides of US 421 Selected Alternative #2: Due to right of way and utility impacts, the project team decided to widen to the west side only. US 421 will taper from 2-11' through lanes to 2-11' through lanes and a 12' left turn lane within the project area.
