John F. Kennedy Bridge inspection and repairs complete

Louisville, KY (March 14, 2013) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) inspectors completed their review yesterday on the John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge.  KYTC bridge inspectors climbed the Kennedy Bridge to take a closer look at an item documented as a possible crack from a detailed inspection of the bridge last fall.

The inspectors determined that a small crack had formed in the steel on one of the upper chords.  The crack was smaller than had been previously indicated and KYTC staff completed a repair of this area by drilling out a piece of steel to remove the crack entirely.  This technique is routinely used on steel bridges to prevent existing cracks from propagating.

KYTC bridge engineers will continue to monitor this area in future inspections.
