Bridging Opportunities Training Program
The Bridging Opportunities Training Program (BOTP) is intended to provide opportunities to traditionally underrepresented students in post-secondary degree programs to gain experience and insight into the variety of careers available with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. This paid internship program provides qualified students opportunities to work alongside highly skilled KYTC professionals, gain hands-on experience, interact with experts and peers, and expand their professional network.
The OCRSBD generally considers traditionally underrepresented students as members of groups that have been historically underrepresented such as females, minorities, students with disabilities, nontraditional students, veterans, and students impacted by socio-economic pressures. (Note: This is not a complete list. The onus will be on the student to explain in their personal statement how they are underrepresented.)
Internship Qualifications
- 2.5 GPA or higher.
- Enrolled as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student during the term of internship.
- Have earned at least 30 undergraduate semester hours.
- Applicants must submit:
- Application
- Unofficial transcript
- Resume
- One (1) recommendation letter written by a non-family member. (Ideally from professor, advisor, or some other professional affiliation.)
- Personal statement explaining why you applied to the BOTP and how being a traditionally underrepresented student will impact your public service.
What makes a compelling application?
Students make themselves stand out in various ways, and everyone brings something unique to the program. Things to consider including in your personal statement are 1) personal challenges that you've faced, 2) work you've done that gives back to the community, 3) leadership experience, 4) anything that gives the selection committee some idea of who you are as a person. This should not be viewed as a checklist, or an exhaustive list, but just some tips to help guide you.
