Interstate 65 in Louisville will close between the Watterson Expressway (I-264) and downtown Louisville (Jefferson Street) from June 1- July 31 to speed progress on replacing 3 aging bridges.
The closure will save at least a year of construction restrictions, and a signed detour will be in place. Local street closures and ramp closures will also be needed.

I-165 New Interchange Planning Study

Study Objective and Study Area

The objective of this planning study is to assess the need for and potential locations of a new interchange on I-165.

There is a 23-mile segment with no interchange on I-165 between Exit 47 (Hartford) and Exit 70 (Owensboro). This is the longest gap on any of Kentucky's interstates and parkways.

The study area includes a centralized area between the existing interchanges. This is a planning study, intended to identify potential interchange locations, potential benefits, impacts and cost. Interchange type and alignment are not set and would be determined during the design phase. There are no additional funds to design or construct this project at this time.

Why A New Interchange?

New Connection = Faster Travel

An interchange allows local residents who are traveling long distances to get to the Interstate faster. This, in turn, helps reduce some of the traffic volume on US 231.

Emergency Response

During a crash or incident on I-165, it is critical for emergency responders to access the scene quickly. A new interchange would reduce EMS response times to incidents on I-165.

Traffic Diversion

When I-165 or US 231 needs to be closed due to a crash, a new interchange allows traffic to be diverted to the other roadway.

Potential Locations

Locations where an existing roadway crosses I-165 were analyzed first with the goal of connecting a new interchange to US 231.

An improved connection between I-165 and US 231 will increase local network connectivity, reduce traffic on US 231, improve emergency response times, and allow for detours during crashes.

Five potential locations were identified within the study area:

1) Masonville-Habit Road

2) KY 142

3) Poplar Log Bridge Road

4) Crane Pond Road

5) KY 764
