Vehicle crash claims life of Transportation Cabinet employee in Wolfe County

JACKSON, KY – A crash involving two vehicles claimed the life of a Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) employee on Thursday, Nov. 8, and resulted in the injury of the other driver.

An initial investigation by the Kentucky State Police indicates John Fugate, 48, was killed when a vehicle driven by Jamie Fallen crossed the centerline on KY 205 and struck Fugate's truck head on while he was driving. The incident occurred at approximately 1 p.m. EST near Helechawa in Wolfe County on KY 205, near the intersection of KY 191. Fallen was airlifted to seek medical attention at the University of Kentucky Medical Center.

"Our hearts are heavy for the family of John Fugate, a dedicated public servant who worked tirelessly on behalf of the Commonwealth and KYTC for over 23 years," said Gov. Matt Bevin. "Let us all remember his family, friends, and community in prayer during this incredibly difficult time."

KYTC Secretary Greg Thomas expressed his condolences for the fallen transportation employee.

"We are deeply saddened to unexpectedly lose a member of the KYTC family," said Secretary Thomas. "John will be missed and we truly honor all of his decades of faithful service to the Cabinet. Our hearts are with his family, friends and fellow colleagues during this time of grief."

A long-time employee of the Cabinet, Fugate served as a transportation engineering technologist in the Materials Lab of the Department of Highways District 10 office.

"We in District 10 are shocked and saddened by this news," said District 10 Chief District Engineer Corbett Caudill. "John Fugate was a longtime, valued employee, and many remember his father who also worked for District 10 and retired about 15 years ago. Our hearts go out to the Fugate family. He will be missed, and we mourn along with John's family."

The Kentucky State Police Post 8 office in Morehead is investigating the crash.
