PROJECT OVERVIEW

  • Widening of this portion of I-71 to three lanes in each direction on the inside (median side) of the existing pavement to improve mobility and relieve congestion along I-71 from the KY 1039 interchange continuing to the KY 35 interchange (53.43 to 56.67 mile points).
  • By widening to three lanes, existing and future traffic demands would be accommodated.
  • Additionally, three lanes allows for two lanes of traffic to be maintained during construction activities, which would reduce construction related traffic congestion.

WHAT IS THE SCOPE OF THE PROJECT?

  • The project proposes to address existing pavement base deterioration with deep milling, breaking and seating of the underlying concrete pavement, and overlaying with asphalt pavement.
  • The project also proposes to widen this section of I-71 towards the inside to create a flush median with concrete median barrier wall and three lanes of traffic in each direction from the KY 1039 interchange continuing to the KY 35 interchange. The I-71 bridges over KY 47 will be replaced with a new, single span bridge with a typical section matching the median widening proposed.

WHY IS THE PROJECT NEEDED?

  • To improve capacity on I-71 from the KY 1039 interchange continuing to the KY 35 interchange to meet existing and forecasted traffic demand.
  • To improve deficiencies in the I-71 roadway pavement structure.
