ROADWAY DAMAGE FROM HISTORIC RAIN EVENT IN EARLY APRIL While the high water has receded, we’re still addressing the damage it left behind. Some routes remain fully or partially closed following the historic rainfall our region experienced in early April. We’ll continue to share updates as they become available.
CAMPBELL COUNTY Stevens Branch Road (KY 1996) just east of Persimmon Grove Pike (KY 1121) is closed due to a slide at the 0.2 mile point. Crews are currently working on clearing this area. It is expected to reopen Friday, Aug. 8.
I-275 CARROLL CROPPER BRIDGE UPDATES
Crews have returned to the Carroll Cropper Bridge. Three additional expansion joint repairs have been added to the repair project. Crews will work on these repairs, along with the three final T-1 steel repair locations over the coming weeks. Additionally, the contractor is finalizing a shoring plan for floor beam repair work. More updates on the floor beam repairs will follow.
*** On Tuesday, Dec. 17, KYTC implemented weight limits for emergency vehicles and temporary lane restrictions on the I-275 Carroll Cropper Memorial Bridge. While the bridge remains safe for passenger vehicles, a recent inspection found deterioration in some of its steel. New Emergency Vehicle Weight Limits: - Single Axle: 16 tons
- Tandem Axle: 23 tons
- Gross Weight: 31 tons
The weight reduction will not impact commercial vehicle traffic due to semi-trucks having more axles to distribute the weight. Overweight Over-Dimensional vehicles are not permitted on the bridge at this time due to current lane restrictions. KYTC bridge engineering analysis shows the reduced weight limit and lane restrictions are needed as a precaution, and to prevent further damage until the structure can be repaired. The repairs will be added to a previously scheduled steel repair project that is currently in progress. CURRENT TRAFFIC IMPACTS: A traffic shift has been implemented on the eastbound side of the I-275 Carroll Cropper Memorial Bridge over the Ohio River in Boone County. A temporary speed limit reduction of 55 MPH is currently in place. A queue warning system has also been installed on both sides of the river to warn motorists of any stopped or slowed traffic on/near the bridge. Here's what you need to know: Eastbound Traffic Shift (drivers heading from Indiana to Kentucky): - On Monday, May 5, crews performed a traffic switch. Traffic will ultimately merge to the left lane ahead of the bridge, and then shift over to the right lane near the bridge's main span.
Westbound Traffic (drivers heading from Kentucky to Indiana): - A single right lane closure is in place on I-275 westbound. This lane closure begins at the top of the hill, and spans the length of the Carroll Cropper Memorial Bridge.
T-1 Steel Repairs: - The scheduled T-1 steel repairs began on Monday, Jan. 20.
Looking Ahead: - Once floor beam repairs are made, current weight restrictions for emergency vehicles will be lifted.

VARIOUS ROUTES: Districtwide striping is currently on hold. Originally scheduled to start this week, due to inclement weather they will not move into our district at this time. We're working with the contractor to identify a new start date.
Contractors will be striping various routes within the district: Boone, Bracken, Campbell, Carroll, Gallatin, Grant, Harrison, Kenton, Owen, Pendleton, and Robertson. Most work will occur during daytime working hours of 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Routes with higher traffic volume will be completed during nights or weekends to minimize traffic impacts.
Interstate routes will be completed first followed by primary state routes then secondary routes. Striping is a slow-moving mobile operation. Motorists should slow down and expect slow moving traffic in mobile work zones. Please avoid driving over fresh, wet paint. The project has a completion date of Aug. 15, 2025.
VARIOUS COUNTIES (BOONE, CAMPBELL, CARROLL, GALLATIN, GRANT AND KENTON): Starting Thursday, April 17, contractors will install “Wrong Way”, “Do Not Enter”, “One Way”, and “Stop” signs at interchanges and exit ramps in Boone, Campbell, Carroll, Gallatin, Grant and Kenton counties. The improvements aim to reduce wrong way driving incidents and enhance safety.
The signage installation follows a separate contract that was completed last year (2024) to install wrong way pavement striping at the same locations.
Work will be performed between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. daily. Lane closures will be in place during work hours. At locations with three or more lanes, one lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained. At locations with two lanes, alternating one-way traffic will be maintained with a flagger on site to direct motorists. Traffic on exit ramps will be maintained at partial-width (10 ft. minimum) lanes.
For a full list of locations/details read our full press release here. KENTON AND CAMPBELL COUNTIES Monday, Aug. 4 and Tuesday, Aug. 5: The contractor will be removing thermoplastic intersection markings on U.S. 25 and U.S. 27 between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. Single lane closures in each direction will be utilized during working hours. One lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained at all times. *** A preventive maintenance project began on Tuesday, June 24, on multiple routes in Kenton and Campbell counties. The project includes crack sealing, electrical work and application of a thin asphalt overlay known as a thinlay. Thinlays are used as a pavement preservation treatment to restore surface conditions and extend the service life of roads that are still structurally sound. Crack sealing operations and some electrical work items are complete. The sealed areas will require a 30-day curing period before paving can begin. Pavement work is tentatively scheduled to begin in early Aug. Locations: Madison Pike (KY 17), Kenton County — From Moffett Road (KY 2042) at mile point 7.97 to just north of KY 14 at mile point 4.94. Alexandria Pike (U.S. 27), Campbell County — From Bluegrass Avenue at mile point 20.49 to Moock Road (KY 1632) at mile point 19.84. Dixie Highway (U.S. 25), Kenton County — From Hallam Avenue at mile point 6.26 to Carran Drive at mile point 7.88. Prior to paving operations on Dixie Highway, crews will remove the existing Qwick Kurb lane separators from the southbound left turn lanes into Crestview Hills Town Center. The existing Qwick Kurb will be reinstalled following completion of the thinlay. The project has a completion date of Sept. 30, 2025.
