Concrete Work Continues at US 23's South Shore Intersection in Greenup County
Expect lane closures, turn lane changes

FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. (Oct. 1, 2021) – Motorists should watch for traffic changes on US 23 at South Shore in Greenup County as concrete work continues this weekend and next week at the Main Street (KY 7) intersection.

Construction will take place through October. Contractors are replacing damaged blacktop with new concrete, and lane closures will shift each week for concrete paving.

Motorists should expect traffic impacts, day and night, according to the following schedule:

  • This weekend, Northbound US 23: Right thru lane, right-turn lane closed through Tuesday, Oct. 5. Motorists needing right-turn access into Main Street (to cross the railroad tracks) must detour. Main Street should reopen Tuesday. Left-turn lane into Main Street (downtown) open. Thru traffic restricted to one lane next week.
  • Next week, beginning Monday, Oct. 4, Southbound US 23: Right thru lane (currently) closed; right-turn lane closed. Turns into Main Street (downtown) will be open from the left thru lane, but under construction. Expect shifting turn locations and flagged traffic. Left thru lane will remain open. Left-turn lane should be open after Tuesday.

Throughout construction, there will be wet concrete in closed lanes. Please do not pass barricades or drive through cones. Please heed all signs and flaggers. Speed limits will be reduced, and law enforcement will be on site monitoring traffic.

Congestion and delays are likely at the intersection, which is used by about 10,000 vehicles a day. Motorists should plan their travel accordingly, or seek alternate routes.

The project – being done by Mountain Enterprises, Inc., under a $900,000 Kentucky Transportation Cabinet contract – is designed to smooth out the US 23-Main Street intersection where traffic has created ruts in the blacktop. Concrete, which is harder and resists rutting, is used at intersections to provide a smoother and safer ride.

Road work and lane closure schedules are subject to change depending on weather conditions. Motorists are advised to watch electronic message boards for weekly changes, heed all warning signs, slow down in work zones, and remain aware of workers and construction equipment when traveling.
