Concrete intersection, signal work planned KY 1/7, I-64 overpass at Grayson
Shoulder, lane closures start July 31; no work fair week

FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. (July 27, 2017) – Contractors plan to start next week, July 31, on a $1.2 million pavement improvement project at Grayson’s KY 1/7 intersections north of the I-64 overpass.

The project will replace blacktop with new concrete pavement on KY 1/7 between the interstate overpass and C.W. Stevens Boulevard, including at the westbound I-64 on and off ramps – similar to what was done last year on the city side of the overpass.

Concrete pavement provides added stability by preventing ruts and other wear and tear common to high-traffic intersections.

Beginning Monday, July 31, contractors will remove blacktop pavement north of the overpass, which will be followed by installation of concrete. Two-way traffic will be maintained during construction. However, traffic will be restricted to one lane each direction at times on KY 1/7 and on C.W. Stevens Boulevard during daytime work hours of 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Lane closures will remain overnight when concrete is curing.

In addition, the continuous right turn lane from southbound KY 1/7 to westbound I-64 will be closed. All traffic to westbound I-64 must use the turn lane at the on- and off-ramp traffic light.

Because of the high volume of traffic at the interstate overpass, lengthy delays are possible during construction. Motorists should adjust travel plans accordingly, or seek alternate routes. Pedestrians must use the side of the highway that’s not under construction.

No work or lane closures will take place Aug. 6-12 to accommodate Carter County Fair and back-to-school traffic. Work will resume Aug. 14. Night work is possible on the project. Motorists should watch message boards for traffic and construction schedule changes.

In addition to new concrete pavement, this project will also provide new guardrail, drainage repairs, and new traffic lights at the KY 7 and westbound I-64 on and off ramps; and the concrete at the KY 1947 and C.W. Stevens Boulevard intersection will be refinished.

Mountain Enterprises, Inc., has been awarded a $1,224,893 low-bid contract by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet to complete the work. The project has a Nov. 15 completion date.

Road work schedules are subject to change depending on weather conditions. Motorists are asked to heed all warning signs, slow down in work zones and remain aware of workers and construction equipment when traveling.
