This Week in District 9: Closures on US 60, KY 854, paving on US 23, I-64, work on KY 57, KY 11 elsewhere
Traffic impacts listed in seven northeast counties
FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. (Aug. 18, 2014) – Closure of US 60 at Salt Lick in Bath County and of KY 854 in Boyd County on Wednesday, as well as paving and construction in six other counties, are among road projects affecting traffic this week in northeast Kentucky.
BOYD COUNTY
On Wednesday, Aug. 20, contractors will close KY 854 in Boyd County at the 1.8 mile marker near Rush – between Needmore Hollow and Davis Road – to replace a 60-inch drainage pipe underneath the highway. The road will be closed to all traffic 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. Motorists may detour using US 60, KY 966 and KY 3, or other routes. The culvert replacement is in preparation for paving, which is expected to start next week, the week of Aug. 25, with one-lane traffic controlled by flaggers.
In addition, contractors are continuing to resurface nearly two miles of US 60 from near KY 5 at Princess to the traffic lights at the KY 180 intersection in Cannonsburg. Traffic is one lane controlled by flaggers during daytime work hours. Expect delays.
Nighttime paving operations are continuing along two miles of Greenup Avenue (US 23) in Ashland, from the 7th Street-Winchester Avenue split north of downtown to the 32nd Street-Winchester split south. Lane closures along the four-lane highway are possible nightly, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., as well as some possible daytime work zones.
BATH COUNTY
US 60 will be closed at Salt Lick 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., weather permitting, today and possibly Tuesday, Aug. 19, to correct a landslide along Salt Lick Creek. Closure will be just to the Owingsville side of the KY 211 south intersection at Salt Lick. The highway will reopen overnight. Detour using I-64 between Exit 123 at US 60 Owingsville and Exit 133 at KY 801. For local traffic, the roadway will remain open up to either side of the work site. Motorists should also watch for one-lane traffic at that location during the next several weeks for final repairs.
LEWIS COUNTY
Paving on KY 57 from the Fleming-Lewis county line toward Tollesboro near the KY 1237 intersection is expected to start this week, weather permitting. Watch for one-lane traffic controlled by flaggers.
CARTER COUNTY
Road work is taking place along Interstate 64 in Carter County from mile markers 166 to 172, which is between the Gregoryville-Fultz Road overpass and the Grayson exit. Traffic is one lane eastbound and westbound, and the speed limit is 55 miles per hour in the work zone – a double-fine zone when workers are present.
ELLIOTT COUNTY
Work is continuing on five miles of KY 7 being rebuilt from just north of KY 706 to the Elliott-Carter county line. Motorists should expect possible lane closures, lane shifts and other impacts, and should be mindful of trucks or other heavy equipment entering and leaving the highway in that area.
FLEMING COUNTY
Railroad contractors have notified the highway department that they will be conducting crossing repairs at Johnson Junction – at the KY 170 and KY 161 intersection – beginning today through Wednesday. The crossing, and roadways, will be closed 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.
Construction is continuing in downtown Flemingsburg on KY 11X – also known as KY 11 Bus., or business route – from the KY 11 and KY 32-Flemingsburg Bypass intersection south of town near Pizza Hut to the KY 11-Flemingsburg Bypass intersection north of town near the country club. Work includes curbside drainage repairs this week, with paving as early as next week. Watch for one-lane traffic controlled by flaggers.
Contractors building the new section of the Flemingsburg Bypass have been working alongside KY 57 in the Sleepy Run area to remove a hillside and straighten the highway’s connection to the new road. By the week of Sept. 1, contractors expect to shift KY 57 traffic onto a temporary route east of the existing highway, so that work can shift to the west side. Message boards and signs will mark the traffic change. Motorists should drive with caution, and slow down through the work zone.
Contractors are also working on roadside and drainage improvements along KY 57 between Flemingsburg and the Lewis County line. Watch for intermittent one-lane traffic and flaggers or temporary traffic signals.
GREENUP COUNTY
Highway crews are preparing KY 784, Lost Creek Road, in southwest Greenup County for paving later this year, with work that includes drainage pipe replacements and roadside repairs. Watch for road and lane closures closures during weekday working hours.
Road work is subject to change depending on weather conditions. Motorists are asked to heed all warning signs, slow down in work zones and remain aware of workers and construction equipment when traveling.
