U.S. 42 Improvements (from the bridge over Harrods Creek to River Road) - 5-972

PublicMeeting-July2025-SocialMedia_REVISED.jpg

PurposeThe purpose of this project is to reduce traffic congestion, improve mobility, and enhance safety along U.S. 42 from the bridge over Harrods Creek to River Road. The need for the project is generally derived from traffic congestion that occurs currently on U.S. 42, combined with the projected future traffic volumes and high crash rates.
Project Scope

Implement safety and mobility enhancements on U.S. 42 from the eastern end of the bridge over Harrods Creek to just east of River Road.

The design work is being conducted following the 2022 Planning Study completed by the City of Prospect, and the early 2011 design work completed by KYTC.

Currently, the project scope includes Preliminary Engineering and Environmental Analysis to address four build alternatives. Should a build alternative be advanced, the scope will then move to the final design phase.

Alternatives/Build Options

The five alternatives currently under consideration include:

  • Keep the existing road; eliminate the signals with 3 roundabouts at the intersections and add pedestrian facilities.

  • Widening to the south for a 5-lane section throughout; keep the three signals and add pedestrian and multi-use facilities.

  • Access Management alternative between Timber Ridge and Fox Harbor.

  • Symmetrical widening for a 5-lane section throughout, and add pedestrian facilities.

  • No build/no changes.
Project Timeline
  • Summer/Fall 2025 — Identify a preferred alternative. If a Build Alternative is selected, the general schedule is as follows:
  • Winter 2026 – Final Design
  • Spring 2026 – Begin Right-of-Way Acquisition
  • 2027-2028 – Utility Relocation
  • 2028-2029 – Construction

*The above project milestone dates are subject to change due to changes in funding availability within the next Enacted Highway Plan.*
