Purpose
Address congestion and mobility issues on KY 1793 at the North Oldham High School campus entrances and provide pedestrian crossing facilities.

Type of Project
Construct a northbound left turn lane on KY 1793 to allow for turning vehicles onto Longwood Lane.

Construct a northbound right turn lane on KY 1793 to allow vehicles to turn into North Oldham High School across from Longwood Lane.

Construct a southbound left turn lane on KY 1793 to allow vehicles to turn into North Oldham High School across from Longwood Lane.

Selected Alternative #5:
Due to the right-of-way and utility impacts, it was decided to widen to the east side of KY 1793.  The right turn lane will begin at the middle school entrance and extend to the shared high school/middle school entrance.  Between those two entrances, the roadway will also taper for a left turn lane onto Longwood Ln.
A southbound left turn lane will also be provided using the width from the northbound left turn lane. The roadway will taper back to two lanes on the north side.

Additionally, crosswalks with Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) will be installed across KY 1793 at Hampton Circle/Harmony Elementary and Longwood Lane/North Oldham High School.  (Please see the Link section for RRFB information.)

Project Timeline

As of Summer 2023 (SUBJECT TO CHANGE*):

  • Utility relocations are complete.
  • KYTC has acquired all necessary right-of-way for the project.
  • KYTC anticipates construction starting in late Fall 2023, with most road widening construction to be completed during Fall 2023.
  • Construction is expected to be complete by the end of 2023.
*The above project milestone dates are subject to change.

Non-selected alternatives

During the preliminary design process, KYTC and consultant teams studied four alternatives for adding turn lanes at the three entrances to the North Oldham Campus. The four alternatives are:
  1. Two-way Left Turn Lane along KY 1793
  2. Turn lanes at the High School entrance and the Middle School entrance along KY 1793
  3.  Turn lanes at the Middle School entrance along KY 1793
  4.  Right turn lanes at the High School/Middle School entrance along KY 1793
A fifth alternate was added due to the following reasons:
  • Provides more right-turn storage at the Middle School than any other alternative, whichh will aid in storage on KY 1793.
  • Provides a northbound left turn onto Longwood Lane.
  • Provides a southbound left turn into the Middle School.
