IN THE SPOTLIGHT: SUBCOMMITTEE ACTIVITY - Construction

The DPD Subcommittee for Construction last met June 4th, 2024. The Construction subcommittee’s most recent goal is to aid Design in implementing level of development and level of accuracy of the 3D models passed over to Construction. This included taking a deep dive into various completed 3D-modeled projects and analyzing inconsistencies across the models. In this most recent meeting, the team focused on recommending 3D design standards for the following common project elements: entrances, grading, guardrail, sidewalk, and pavement. Comments and discussion were centered around Construction’s needs. As an example of the type of decisions discussed, the subcommittee recommended that entrances should be tied in to mainline alignments and slopes should be trimmed so that they do not cross into pavement layers. Another example recommendation was that ditches should be modeled with appropriate transitions to minimize abrupt changes between types and alignments/profiles and slope segments should be tied together to eliminate “blank” space in the model to account for necessary earthwork volumes that may affect unit bid prices.

Furthermore, many other on-going points were also further discussed, including, but not limited to: Greyscale and color PDFs; ease of turning on and off levels; survey issues; training and communication concerns; and manuscript style plans. In summary, this DPD subcommittee’s main goals are to improve communication throughout development and delivery of projects and integrate technology into the field. [07/02/24]
