KYTC Crews Pre-Treating Roadways in Advance of  Winter Weather
Give salt trucks room to treat roadways for afternoon commute

SOMERSET, KY (January 31, 2013) – Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) road crews in District 8 are pre-treating roadways today in preparation of the snow forecasted for this afternoon and continuing into Friday. The pre-treatment of "salt-brine" prevents the snow from bonding to the pavement making it easier to plow off roadways.

Motorists should be alert for slow moving trucks and escort vehicles as crews go about pre-treating today.  Motorists should slow down and use appropriate caution anytime they approach or meet pre-treating crews out on the highway.

District 8 personnel have the responsibility for clearing more than 4,800 miles of state-maintained highways in the counties of Adair, Casey, Clinton, Cumberland, Lincoln, McCreary, Pulaski, Rockcastle, Russell and Wayne.  Crews are prepared to work long hours clearing any accumulation from the roadways.

When bad weather hits, crews are assigned 12-hour shifts to plow and treat roads using a priority system based on the amount and nature of traffic within each individual county. Priority A routes include major through routes and are those most heavily traveled. Priority B routes include other important, but lesser traveled, state routes. Other roads fall into Priority C.

Condition reports on major routes are available by calling 511 or logging onto the 511 travel and traffic information website at www.511.ky.gov.  Road conditions are described in the following manner:

Wet Pavement – The roadway is wet. Ice could form as temperatures drop.

Partly Covered – The roadway is partly covered with snow, slush or ice.  Markings may be obscured.

Mostly Covered – The roadway is mostly covered with snow, slush or ice. Roadway markers may be difficult to see because of packed snow and rutting conditions.

Completely Covered – The roadway is completely covered with snow, slush or ice and markings are obscured.

Impassable – Roadway conditions are not suitable for travel unless required by an emergency.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, through the 511 service strives to provide the most descriptive and up-to-date information for motorists so they know what to expect when they get out on the road.

Advisory: New US 68 in Maysville opening to traffic today

FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. – Contractors removed barricades to new US 68 at Maysville today, Monday, Feb. 11, opening the four-mile section of highway to all traffic.

A planned opening in late December was rescheduled due to lighting issues. Contractors and Kentucky Department of Highways engineers have worked since to resolve those issues and open the new highway – which now connects traffic from the Clyde T. Barbour Parkway (US 68/US 62) across a new AA Highway (KY 9) interchange near Downing Drive to the existing US 68 just south of Old Washington.

Message boards will be in place this week to advise travelers. Motorists should travel with caution and note all directional signs while becoming familiar with the new route.
Traffic on existing US 68 approaching from Lexington may turn left onto the new roadway to connect to the AA Highway and Clyde T. Barbour Parkway. Or, traffic may continue straight to access US 62 at Washington and downtown Maysville.

At the new AA Highway interchange, traffic on the AA Highway approaching from Maysville may turn right at the new on-ramp to access US 68 East and the Clyde T. Barbour Parkway to reach the William Harsha Bridge. Traffic needing access to US 68 West toward Lexington should turn left at the on-ramp just past the interchange. Traffic on the AA Highway approaching from Cincinnati may access US 68 using the same ramps. Dedicated left- and right-turn lanes are available.

Construction on the project began in September 2010 when the Transportation Cabinet awarded a $21.5 million contract to Eaton Asphalt Paving Co. to build the new limited-access highway. During the last two years, work has included not only building the new roadway cross-country but also overpasses at US 62 and Clark’s Run Road and the AA Highway interchange.

The new US 68 is expected to increase highway system capacity and safety in the Maysville area by rerouting traffic away from already-congested routes and intersections.

Before construction, motorists using US 68 shared the same route and congested intersections as US 62 and the AA Highway through Maysville. Now, through traffic can continue directly along the US 68 corridor unimpeded while business traffic can easily access its former path into downtown Maysville.

Interstate 264 ramp closure scheduled for February 8-11

Louisville, KY (February 6, 2013) – With a forecast free of winter precipitation, work can begin this weekend on concrete repairs to Interstate 264 (Watterson Expressway) in the area between Browns Lane and Westport Road (mile points 18.4 and 20.7).

The first phase of construction will be concrete repairs on the ramp from eastbound I-264 to westbound I-64 (Exit 19B).  This ramp will be closed from 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 8 until 6:00 a.m. on Monday, February 11.  Motorists should follow the signed detour for this ramp closure via the Westport Road interchange.

In addition, the right lane of westbound I-64 will be closed this weekend at the bridge over I-264 (mile point 12.4).  This lane closure will allow for replacement of the approach pavement at both ends of the bridge.

The speed limit in the work zone will be reduced to 45 MPH and double fines will be enforced.

The construction work includes replacing some sections of pavement that have settled over time resulting in uneven driving lanes.  This project also includes repairs to ramps in the I-64/I-264 interchange.

For the next few weeks, concrete repairs will be taking place primarily on weekends.  Lane and ramp closures are possible from 8:00 p.m. on Friday until 6:00 a.m. on Monday.

When diamond grinding of the pavement begins later in the project, lane and ramp closures are possible on weeknights Monday – Friday from 8:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. the following morning.

Hall Contracting, Inc. was awarded the contract for this project in the amount of $8.1 million.  The work is scheduled for completion by July 31, 2013.

The actual starting date and duration of this work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur.  Dial 511 or log on to 511.ky.gov for the latest in traffic and travel information in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.  You can also get traffic information for the District 5 counties at www.facebook.com/KYTCDistrict5.
