Permits Branch
Major Permitting Items
Any firm, individual or governmental agency that wants access to a road on the state highway system or wants to conduct any type of work activity on the right-of-way, must obtain a permit.
These include policy and procedures for:
  • Utility facility installations.
  • Permitting of entrances and other correlated roadway modifications.
  • Altering or replacing existing drainage facilities.
  • Plantings upon the right-of-way.
  • Replacement of right-of-way fence.
  • Tree trimming and cutting.
  • Use of roadside chemicals.
  • Highway Advisory Radio.
  • Airspace Usage.
  • Geophysical Surveys or investigations.
  • Treated Sewage Effluent.
  • Locating Facilities on right-of-way.
  • Fairs, Parades, Festivals, Banners, and Welcome Signs.
  • School Site Agreements.
  • Recycler Permits.

Bridge Maintenance Branch
Bridge Over Ohio River

Bridge Maintenance Branch is responsible for the following areas:

  • Coordination of bridge inspection activities
  • Preparation of bridge repair contracts
  • Determination of Bridge weight Restrictions
  • Advising on bridge maintenance problems
  • Keeping current on bridge maintenance and inspection technology
  • Overseeing the Maintenance Management System
  • Extended Weight Coal Haul Program
  • Determine Truck Weight Classifications for Pavements and Bridges

 

Pavement and Operations Branch

Country Road

Pavement and Operations Branch is responsible for the following areas:

  • Perform detailed visual condition evaluations, roughness and rut-depth measurements of pavements for the Interstates, Parkways and Annual Resurfacing Program.
  • Roughness Test 24,700 miles of other state maintained roads.
  • Perform ride ability tests on various projects to check for conformity to requirements.
  • Maintenance Rating Program.
  • Issue reports on the findings of these tests.

Roadway Preservation Branch

Detour

Roadway Preservation Branch manages roadway maintenance programs and prepares roadway maintenance related contracts. The Branch also provides technology transfer and technical assistance to the Districts and other Divisions.
The Contracting Section is responsible for management of the following programs.

  • Statewide Resurfacing Program
  • Interstate Pavement Rehabilitation Program
  • Primary & Parkway Pavement Rehabilitation Program
  • Inmate Crews
  • New Guardrail Program
  • Recycling Guardrail and other materials
  • Review citizen complaints
  • Contract maintenance activities such as upgrading existing roadside guardrail, drainage structure maintenance and replacement, concrete pavement rehabilitation, slide repair, asphalt patching and other miscellaneous maintenance contracts as required.
  • Recommend and Develop 6 year plan projects for Pavement and Bridges
  • State Park Road Improvements

The Basic Maintenance Section provides direct liaison between the Division of Maintenance, Districts, and other Divisions.

The section performs the following specialized activities.

  • Slip & Slide Repair Statewide Coordination
  • Roadway Dam Inspections
  • New Products Evaluations
  • Technology Transfer
  • Specialized Studies & Research Activities
  • Permit and Excess Property Reviews

The Traffic Section manages roadway traffic programs and prepares contracts for this work. This section also provides technical assistance for the Tourism sign program. The sign shop manufactures and distributes standard and speciality sheeting signs for statewide use. The recycling center recycles used guardrail and components by regalvanizing them for reuse on the roadway. The Department also reuses guardrail as cribbing for roadway slides.

The Traffic section is responsible for the following contracts and the management of those programs.

  • Statewide Waterborne Stripping
  • Statewide Raises pavement Markers and lenses
  • Statewide Panel Sign repair and replacement

 

Roadside Environmental Branch

Bullitt County Welcome Center

The Roadside Environmental Team coordinates:

  • Roadside Vegetation Management Programs.
  • The Rest Area Management Program.
  • Maintain Loadometers (Commercial Vehicle Monitoring Stations).
  • Snow and Ice activities.
  • Disaster and Emergency Response.
  • Salt Stockpile.
  • The Environmental Waste Management Program.

The Team also provides technology for enhancing both Vegetation Management Programs and Snow and Ice activities.
