Carpooling, Vanpooling & Slugging

Sharing a ride by carpooling or vanpooling is an excellent way to help reduce traffic and save money at the same time. Many major metropolitan areas have dedicated lanes for high occupancy vehicles (HOV). The advantage given to high occupancy vehicles has spawned a type of ridesharing among strangers called slugging.

The Lexington Bluegrass Mobility Office was established in 1997 by the LFUCG as the central point of contact in all inquiries concerning mobility (transportation) issues. The Mobility Office offers a carpool/vanpool computer ride matching program that includes LexVan, a work commute vanpool leasing program.

Ticket to Ride is the community ridesharing program. We're here to make Kentuckiana a better place to live by easing traffic congestion and reducing pollution. Commuter Choice is a nationwide partnership designed to help employers create customized solutions to their employees' commuting challenges. Commuter Choice can also include communities working with residents, schools working with students, and even developers working with future tenants to provide and promote choices for travelers.

Slugging
Slugging is a term used to describe a unique form of commuting found the Washington, DC area sometimes referred to as "Instant Carpooling" or "Casual Carpooling". It's unique because people commuting into the city stop to pickup other passengers even though they are total strangers. However, slugging is a very organized system with its own set of rules, proper etiquette, and specific pickup and drop-off locations.
