KY 57 Project in Lewis County

Project Description

Map of KY 57 project area from the Lewis County line to the AA Highway at TollesboroThe Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has proposed a project to improve nearly 5 miles of KY 57 in Lewis County between the Fleming County line and the AA Highway at Tollesboro. A public meeting was held in February 2019 and design engineering consultants are currently working with Kentucky Department of Highways District 9 engineers to develop the most effective design.

Background

KY 57 is a rural major collector between the AA Highway (KY 9) in Tollesboro and KY 11 in Flemingsburg. The segment of KY 57 under study from the Fleming/Lewis County line to the A-A Highway in Tollesboro is a continuation of the ongoing corridor improvements along KY 11 from Mt. Sterling to Flemingsburg, and along KY 57 from Flemingsburg to the Fleming/Lewis County line.

The section of KY 57 from MP 0.500 to MP 4.557 is the final segment of this corridor and is currently a narrow two-lane roadway with narrow shoulders, few passing opportunities, many vertical deficiencies, and some horizontal deficiencies.

The purpose of this KY 57 reconstruction project is to improve safety, mobility, access, and connectivity along KY 57 from Flemingsburg to Tollesboro. Proposed solutions will accommodate current and future traffic demands of commuters, school buses, commercial vehicles, and Amish buggies, while providing continuity with the improvements already in place south of this project.

What's Next?

Engineers will develop preliminary alternates and conduct environmental studies beginning in Spring 2019. Another public meeting or public comment period on proposed alternatives, i.e., lines on a map of different improvements, is planned. (Dates listed at prior meetings or on handouts may differ.)

All opportunities for public involvement - an important part of the design process - will be announced in local media and on social media.
