Project Description:
The I-75/I-64 widening project is widening the 2.3 miles of Interstate 75/Interstate 64 at Lexington, Kentucky in Fayette County.
The I-75/I-64 widening project begins at the MP 112.9 at the Paris Pike (US 27) Interchange and extends north to MP 115.2 at the Newtown Pike (KY 922) Interchange.
The project will widen the Interstate to 8 lanes (adding one 12-foot lane in each direction), and improvements to ramps at the Paris Pike Interchange and ramps at the Newtown Pike Interchange.
Need:
The I-75/I-64 widening project is to improve safety and reduce congestion along the Interstate and at two interchanges (Paris Pike and Newtown Pike).
Current crash data shows that the number of crashes along this section of the Interstate has increased every year since 2012.
The interchanges experience heavy congestion. Traffic projections for 2040 forecast 130,000 average daily traffic along this section, which exceeds the current capacity of a 6 lane Interstate (three 12-foot lanes each direction).
Schedule and Status:
2024
This project is part of Driving Lexington Progress – an effort to improve safety, ease traffic congestion, and add capacity to state transportation infrastructure in the growing central Kentucky city through $170 million in Kentucky Transportation Cabinet construction projects along I-75/I-64, New Circle Road (KY 4), and Leestown Road and Newtown Pike (KY 922).
During construction, motorists should take it slow through work zones, eliminate distractions, obey speed limits, heed all warning signs, and drive safely to protect themselves and workers.
