About the I-64 Widening and Improvement Project
The I-64 widening and improvement project is a $118 million infrastructure investment to enhance safety, improve mobility, and foster economic growth in Shelby County. Preliminary work has begun on the three-year project to expand highway capacity, upgrade bridges, and reconstruct the I-64/KY 53 interchange, ensuring a more efficient and reliable transportation network for motorists.
Widening
A six-mile section of I-64, between Exit 32 (KY 55) and the Shelbyville weigh station near KY 1790 (Hooper Station Road), will be widened from four to six lanes. Upon completion, the I-64 corridor will feature three lanes in each direction between Clark Station Road and KY 395 (Waddy Road), ensuring a more efficient and reliable transportation network.
Pavement Upgrades/Rehabilitation
Nearly five miles of I-64 will undergo pavement upgrades from KY 1848 (Buck Creek Road) to Exit 32 (KY 55). Work is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2025, with two lanes remaining open in each direction during peak travel hours. Drivers should expect lane shifts and changing traffic patterns throughout construction.
Bridge Reconstruction
The project includes the reconstruction of three bridges over I-64 to accommodate the increased highway capacity:
- KY 2861 (Zaring Mill Road) – 90-day closure in 2025/2026
- KY 1790 (Hooper Station Road) – 120-day closure in 2025/2026
- KY 53 (Mt. Eden Road) – Traffic will remain open during construction
Additionally, two sets of I-64 bridges will be reconstructed to accommodate the increased highway capacity:
- I-64 bridges over Clear Creek at mile point 33.2
- The two existing separate bridges will be reconstructed into a single bridge
- I-64 bridges over Guist Creek at mile point 36.9
- The two existing separate bridges will be reconstructed to accommodate the widening of I-64
I-64/KY 53 (Mt. Eden Road) Interchange Reconstruction
The I-64/KY 53 (Mt. Eden Road) interchange will be reconstructed to replace the existing loop ramp with a more efficient diamond interchange. This design will enhance safety and improve traffic flow. As part of the interchange improvement portion of the project, KY 53 (Mt. Eden Road) will also be widened from St. Regis Road to KY 1790 (Hooper Station Road).
A diamond interchange has two intersections, two diagonal entry ramps, and two diagonal exit ramps:

More information on diamond interchanges can be found here.
Phasing Information
Construction will be completed in multiple phases over a three-year period. Specific details regarding traffic impacts are listed online and shared via a weekly update.
- Phase 1A – Preliminary Work:
Nightly lane closures (traffic reduced to one lane) | 7 p.m. – 6 a.m. - Milling of all existing rumble strips on outside shoulders between Exit 32 (KY 55) and the Shelbyville weigh station near KY 1790 (Hooper Station Road).
- Setting of barrier walls for shifting traffic to the outside shoulders to work in the middle lanes
- Phase 1:
Daily/nightly lane closures during non-peak travel times - Widening of I-64 from mile point 32.29 to mile point 38.3 (build inside lane and shoulder)
- Work on the three bridges over I-64 to accommodate the widening of I-64 (nighttime closures of I-64 are to be expected for the demolition of the bridges over I-64 and for setting bridge beams).
- KY 2861 (Zaring Mill Road) – 90-day closure in 2025/2026
- KY 1790 (Hooper Station Road) – 120-day closure in 2025/2026
- KY 53 (Mt. Eden Road) – Traffic will remain open during construction
- Phase 2 and 3:
- Sound wall installation near Exit 35 at KY 53 (Mt. Eden Road) near residential properties
- Outside lane construction of I-64 (begin with one direction and switch)
- Rolling roadblocks for blasting operations for up to 15 minutes per hour are to be expected during daytime hours (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.)
- I-64/KY 53 (Mt. Eden Road) interchange reconstruction
