Purpose

The project on Interstate 64 East and West in Jefferson and Shelby Counties from mile marker 19.44 to mile marker 27.88 includes the milling and removal of the existing asphalt pavement with the replacement of new asphalt pavement. Other improvements to the nearly 9-mile corridor include bridge repairs, subgrade repairs, and guardrail repairs/installation.  

This project will extend the life of the interstate and improve driver comfort on the roadway.

Project Timeline

SHELBY COUNTY:
- Shift traffic onto the outside shoulder and stripe temporary lanes
- Place temporary barrier wall
- Milling and drainage work
- Move the temporary barrier wall onto the newly constructed base from the eastbound side for temporary traffic configuration for work to begin on the westbound side
- Remove temporary barrier wall and place surface over newly constructed base for permanent lanes 2 and 3
- Shift traffic back to original configuration, placing traffic in lanes 2 and 3 to begin work on the westbound side. 


JEFFERSON COUNTY:
- Base failure repairs in various locations
- Shift traffic for milling and surface paving
- Perform all guard rail work and shouldering work
- Shift traffic back to original configuration placing traffic in lanes 2 and 3
- Shoulder paving and mainline paving


*Construction of the eastbound side is set to be completed by early Spring 2024. The project's completion date is anticipated for Fall 2024. 

Contractor: E & B Paving Company, LLC., of North Anderson, In., was awarded the $13.989 million contract.

Work Zone Impacts


Queue warning systems and signage will be installed along the route before the construction zone to notify motorists of slowed traffic.

Motorists should expect changing traffic patterns, lane shifts, and closures as construction progresses. It is advised to seek an alternate route if possible. 

Downloading the Waze app is beneficial in seeing current travel times as well as closures.
