Transportation Enhancements
Transportation Enhancements (TE) are transportation-related activities designed to strengthen the cultural, aesthetic, historic, and environmental aspects of our transportation infrastructure.
Congress passed the most current transportation bill, the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21), in 2012.  Dedicated funding for the federal TE program was eliminated under MAP-21.  States are able to use their remaining TE funding, however, no additional TE funds are available to the states.
Some activities eligible for TE funding are now eligible under the Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP).  Please see the Transportation Alternatives Program Federal Guidance for a list of eligible activities.
Eligible Activities
At a minimum, all projects must have a relationship to the surface transportation system and fall under one of the following twelve eligible categories to be considered for TE funding:
  • Pedestrian & bicycle facilities
  • Pedestrian & bicyclist safety and education
  • Acquisition of scenic or historic easements & sites, including battlefields
  • Scenic or historic highway programs
  • Landscaping and Scenic beautification
  • Historic preservation
  • Historic transportation buildings
  • Rail corridor preservation
  • Inventory, control, and removal of outdoor advertising
  • Archaeological planning and research
  • Environmental mitigation
  • Transportation museums
Please visit FHWA's TE website for more detailed information on eiligible activities.
