KYTC District 10 team wins 2017 state Equipment Roadeo championship
Morgan County’s Matt Howard wins first place in single-axle truck competition; four other competitors earn trophies

JACKSON, KY – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Department of Highways District 10 brought home its first-ever state championship from the 2017 statewide Equipment Roadeo held June 27-28 at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington.

Morgan County’s Matt Howard won the individual championship for the single-axle truck competition, and four other District 10 competitors won awards for their performances in individual events.

Scott Prater from Morgan County placed second in the single-axle truck event; Patrick Graham from Powell County and John Rose from Wolfe County finished second and third respectively in the backhoe competition; and Reed Graham from Wolfe County won third place in the grader event.

“We are beyond proud of what our participants accomplished this year,” said Corbett Caudill, chief district engineer for the Department of Highways District 10. “Winning the overall state championship is really a big deal, and to have so many of our competitors place in the top three in the individual events is very impressive. We couldn’t be happier about what our team accomplished this year.”

The competition is part of the annual Equipment Operators Safety & Training Conference. Teams from all 12 state highway districts across Kentucky competed for the championship. The event allows equipment operators across the state to show their skills in operating the equipment they use to maintain state highways. The obstacle courses simulate actual situations equipment operators may encounter in the performance of their duties.

District 10’s winners are eligible to join event winners from Kentucky’s other highway districts to participate in the annual Southeastern Regional Equipment Operators Safety Training Conference competition, to be held in the Great Smoky Mountains area of Tennessee later this year.

“Our equipment operators work hard to maintain our state highways,” Caudill said. “This will be a well-deserved trip for our winners, and we will be cheering for them to bring home a regional championship with the rest of Kentucky’s competitors.”

District 10 encompasses the counties of Breathitt, Estill, Lee, Magoffin, Menifee, Morgan, Owsley, Perry, Powell and Wolfe in east-central and southeastern Kentucky.
