Final paving on US 23 in Ashland and Catlettsburg starts next week in Boyd County
Completion of six-mile, $3 million project
FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. (Oct. 25, 2019) – Contractors will begin final paving next week on a $3 million US 23 improvement project in Ashland and Catlettsburg.
Beginning Tuesday, Oct. 29, crews will resurface almost two miles of US 23 between 43rd Street in Ashland and Center Street (KY 3294) in Catlettsburg – between mile markers 14 to 16. Motorists should expect one-lane traffic and delays from about 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day. Work should be complete by Friday, Nov. 1, weather permitting.
The paving is part of an overall six-mile project that includes new blacktop, sidewalk and curb repairs along the heavily-traveled County Music Highway between I-64 at Catlettsburg and the Greenup-Winchester avenue split at Ashland. Work on the section being paved now was delayed for a City of Ashland water line improvement project.
Because of US 23's heavy traffic – as much as 20,000 vehicles per day use the highway – significant delays are likely when paving requires one-lane traffic. In addition, turn lanes and business entrances may be blocked for brief periods of time. Motorists should plan travel accordingly and are encouraged to seek alternate routes if possible, especially during paving operations.
The project is being done by Mountain Enterprises Inc. under a $2,720,720.10 low-bid Transportation Cabinet contract.
Road work schedules are subject to change depending on weather conditions. Motorists are asked to heed all warning signs, slow down in work zones and remain aware of workers and construction equipment when traveling.
