State highway department's 'Paint The Plow' program returns for area schools
Safety and community outreach effort

FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. (Sept. 16, 2019) – Kentucky Department of Highways District 9 is once again inviting northeast Kentucky schools to "Paint The Plow" blades.

Paint The Plow, through which students may paint a state snow plow blade with original artwork to represent their school, is a Transportation Cabinet community outreach program. It's designed to promote safety as snow plow crews get ready for the upcoming winter season and to provide learning opportunities in the counties that District 9 serves.

The program is open to schools in Bath, Boyd, Carter, Elliott, Fleming, Greenup, Lewis, Mason, Nicholas and Rowan counties this fall. Principals, art teachers, or other educators must apply with District 9 to participate. Once approved and if a plow blade is available, the local maintenance facility will drop off a blade at the school for painting. Schools are responsible for all paint and other supplies.

Participants are encouraged to paint traffic safety or winter weather related themes, and may use their school's colors or logo or their mascot on the blades.

Once painted, the plow blades will be picked up and used on roads by District 9 crews throughout the winter season – like rolling billboards to enhance community pride for both state highway crews and schools, and to spread safety messages to motorists across northeast Kentucky.

To learn more and fill out a Paint The Plow application, teachers may visit http://bit.ly/D9PaintThePlow online. Or, contact Allen Blair at Highway District 9 in Flemingsburg at (606) 845-2551 or via email at Allen.Blair@ky.gov. Applications are due Oct. 1, and all blades should be painted by Oct. 26.
