KY 168 paving project begins Thursday in Boyd County
Expect traffic delays

FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. (May 8, 2019) – Contractors expect to start paving operations on KY 168 in Boyd County this week as part of a $400,000 Kentucky Transportation Cabinet highway improvement project.

The project includes a thin layer of asphalt resurfacing along the entire eight miles of KY 168 from Catlettsburg through Ashland – encompassing the Valley View Drive, Blackburn Avenue and Hoods Creek Pike areas – that will improve driving conditions and lengthen the life of the existing pavement.

Work is scheduled to start Thursday afternoon, May 9, beginning on Valley View Drive at the US 23 intersection at Catlettsburg. Crews will pave toward Ashland, advancing over several days to the US 23 intersection north of Ashland.

During work hours, approximately 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., KY 168 will be restricted one lane with traffic controlled by flaggers where crews are working. Lane closures will be removed daily.

Because of KY 168's high traffic usage – it ranges from 2,000 vehicles a day on the Catlettsburg end to more than 5,000 vehicles a day along Hoods Creek Pike – motorists should expect lengthy traffic backups and delays, and are encouraged to seek alternate routes if possible during construction. Paving currently taking place on US 23 will be suspended during KY 168 operations.

The work is being done under a $416,023.48 low-bid Transportation Cabinet contract awarded to Mountain Enterprises Inc.

Road work schedules are subject to change depending on weather conditions. Motorists are asked to heed all warning signs, slow down in work zones and remain aware of workers and construction equipment when traveling.
