Bridge repair, painting begins on I-64 in Carter and Rowan counties
Part of $2 million improvement project
FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. (April 5, 2019) – A Kentucky Transportation Cabinet bridge painting and repair project totaling nearly $2 million will start next week along I-64 in Carter and Rowan counties.
Contractors will begin joint repairs Tuesday, April 9, or Wednesday, depending upon weather, on the I-64 bridges over the Little Sandy River east of Grayson. Motorists should expect one-lane traffic across the bridges – the right lane will close first, followed by the left lane – during work hours, approximately 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day.
Repair work will progress east to west along I-64 throughout the month as crews move from the Grayson bridges to the US 60 overpass bridge west of Grayson, then to the Tygarts Creek bridges near Olive Hill and the Bull Fork Creek bridges near Morehead in Rowan County.
In May, painting contractors will mobilize to paint bridge beams underneath each of the bridges.
Where contractors are working, the bridges will be restricted to one-lane traffic each direction during daytime work hours only. Motorists should watch electronic message boards for closure notices and times at each of the following structures:
CARTER COUNTY
- I-64 bridges over Little Sandy River east of Grayson (mile marker 172.6)
- US 60 bridge over I-64 west of Grayson (at I-64 mile marker 164.7)
- I-64 bridges over Tygarts Creek just west of Olive Hill Exit 161
ROWAN COUNTY
- I-64 bridges over Bull Fork Creek and road (mile marker 135 just west of Morehead exit)
The work is being done under a $1,987,295 low-bid Transportation Cabinet contract awarded to Seminole Equipment Inc.
Road work schedules are subject to change depending on weather conditions. Motorists are asked to heed all warning signs, slow down in work zones and remain aware of workers and construction equipment when traveling.
