Work begins on new turn lanes on US 60, KY 180 in Boyd County
Part of $600,000 safety improvement

FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. (May 10, 2018) – Work will begin next week on a $600,000 Transportation Cabinet turn lane project to improve traffic flow and safety on US 60 and KY 180 from Summit to Interstate 64 in Boyd County.

The project includes constructing three new left-turn lanes and extending six left-turn lanes on the four-lane highways in four areas:

  • KY 180 (milepoint 2.0-2.1) at Cannonsburg: New left-turn lane on eastbound KY 180 (toward the interstate) at Heritage Temple Freewill Baptist Church

  • US 60 (milepoint 6.05) near Summitt: New left-turn lane on eastbound US 60 and extension of left-turn lane on westbound US 60 at Marsh Hill Drive

  • US 60 (milepoint 6.55-6.7) near Summitt: Extend left-turn lanes on both east and west US 60 between Shopes Creek Road (KY 538) and Cooksey Lane; and new left-turn lanes between Cooksey and Trinity Lane, with the westbound extensions creating a lengthier lane for traffic turning into Shopes Creek

  • US 60 (milepoint 6.9-6.95) near Summitt: New left-turn lanes on eastbound US 60 at Deal Lane and adjacent car wash entrance

Contractors expect to start work on the project on Monday, May 14, on the new turn lanes near Shopes Creek and Deal Lane. Work will require daily lane closures on US 60 with one-lane traffic during daytime work hours. Work will progress along US 60 to the KY 180 turn lane locations. With the heavy volume of traffic on these highways, motorists should expect length delays and should plan travel accordingly.

The goal of the project is to improve traffic flow and safety on US 60 and KY 180 — which handles an average of 12,000 to 23,000 vehicles per day — by separating thru traffic from turning traffic with turn lanes. The improved traffic flow can reduce congestion and improve safety by reducing the risk of rear-end or similar collisions.

The project is being done under a $595,634.50 low-bid Transportation Cabinet contract awarded to Mountain Enterprises Inc. The contractor has until June 30 to complete the project.

Road work schedules are subject to change depending on weather conditions. Motorists are asked to heed all warning signs, slow down in work zones and remain aware of workers and construction equipment when traveling.
