KYTC District 9 Update: Roads improved, crews to continue plow duty

Watch for snow in shady areas, back roads, and refreezing overnight

FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. (4:30 PM, Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2018) – Sun, salt and state plow crews' around-the-clock hours led to much improved road conditions today across northeast Kentucky.

As of 4:30 p.m., main Priority A routes such as I-64, US 60, AA Highway, US 68, KY 32, KY 11 and others are mostly clear and drying in Bath, Boyd, Carter, Elliott, Fleming, Greenup, Lewis, Nicholas, Mason and Rowan counties. Slush could remain in some areas along US 23 and the Industrial Parkway and in areas that saw greater snowfall.

As crews focused on Priority B and C routes today, those highways have improved, too, but some snow cover remains – especially on lesser traveled C routes.

Motorists should stay cautious, especially on roads in low-lying valleys and between hills where shade has made snow more difficult to remove. Watch for refreezing tonight and during Thursday morning's commute, and treat any snow-covered areas as potentially slick.

In Kentucky Department of Highways District 9, crews will remain on duty through the evening then cease operations as temps fall into the single digits making salt ineffective. Crews will return at 6 a.m. Thursday – or earlier if called out – to fight refreezing, and finish up snow removal throughout the day.
