KYTC Crews On Alert for Continued Snow
Plows, salt trucks remain prepped and ready
FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. (Monday, Jan. 15, 2018) — State snowfighters are preparing for more snow tonight even as they finish plow operations after a round of light snow blanketed northeast Kentucky early this morning.
Kentucky Department of Highways District 9 crews in Bath, Boyd, Carter, Elliott, Fleming, Greenup, Lewis, Mason, Nicholas and Rowan counties took salt trucks and snow plows out about 5 or 6 a.m. With temperatures rising into the mid-30s, most roads were clearing by noon — although snowy conditions could linger in counties along the Ohio River. Crews are watching the radar, and are restocking salt and prepping trucks for a second round of snow showers.
The National Weather Service forecasts more snow beginning around 6 p.m. today, and continuing overnight into Tuesday morning.
Crews across northeast Kentucky will have plows and salt trucks ready to roll as soon as snow starts, and will work 12-hour shifts to keep highways as clear as possible.
With temperatures plummeting into the mid-teens overnight and through Tuesday, salt will be not be as effective. Motorists should be prepared for slick travel until the storm passes, especially during Tuesday morning’s commute.
If travel is necessary, slow down, buckle up and use extra caution when driving in snow or during any winter weather event. Give yourself a “space cushion” for maneuverability by maintaining a safe distance between vehicles, and be mindful of slow-moving snow plows. Also, remember that bridges and overpasses can freeze before roadways.
