Road crews will remain on duty

FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. (8 AM, Monday, Jan. 8, 2018) – State highways crews remain on salt truck duty this morning as a winter storm moves across the northeast Kentucky region.

As of 7:30 a.m., Kentucky Department of Highways District 9 crews in Bath, Boyd, Carter, Elliott, Fleming, Greenup, Lewis, Mason, Nicholas and Rowan counties report mostly wet pavement, with scattered icy precipitation. Some report slick spots on bridges, cold spots, elevated surfaces, which are being spot treated with salt. Air temperatures are averaging 33 to 38 degrees, with pavement temps around 28 degrees.

All crews, which reported for duty at 3 a.m., will remain on patrol today treating highways until temperatures rise and precipitation switches to all rain.

In Highway District 9, crews use more than 75 snow plows and have access to 20,000 tons of salt, working 12-hour shifts during winter duty to keep state highways as clear as possible.
