Governor Bevin announces $107,210 in transportation funding for City of Liberty
Discretionary funds designated for critical pavement improvements

SOMERSET, Ky. (Sept. 18, 2019) – During a visit Tuesday to the city of Liberty, Governor Matt Bevin announced $107,210 in discretionary funds for vital resurfacing work on Carmicle Street, Fair Street and Wolford Avenue. Resurfacing repairs address existing surface cracks, potholes, raveling, and base failures. This significant investment supports the Governor's commitment to prioritize transportation infrastructure projects and increase economic opportunity across the Commonwealth.

"The Bevin Administration continues to focus on taking care of what we have at both the state and local level to address critical infrastructure needs that improve safety and support job creation and retention," said KYTC Secretary Greg Thomas. "This funding builds upon existing transportation investments and allows the Cabinet to collaborate with local governments to identify projects that will have a large impact in communities."

Liberty Mayor Steven Brown identified these roads as being among the most critical in the city.

"We would like to express our gratitude to Governor Matt Bevin and Commissioner Gray Tomblyn for granting our request for the funds to blacktop several city streets," said Mayor Brown. "Without this assistance from the Governor, it would not have been possible to fund a project of this size. These funds will go a long way to improve the street conditions in the City of Liberty and improving the quality of life for our citizens. Thank you again for your commitment to our community."

Projects submitted to the Department of Rural and Municipal Aid for discretionary fund consideration were evaluated by KYTC district staff to assess the condition of roads and determine the most critical needs based on factors such as safety, economic impact, and traffic volumes.

"These discretionary funds are critical in addressing roadway wear and tear and ensure the safety and mobility of drivers in the community," said Sen. Jimmy Higdon. "I am pleased Liberty will be able to make much-needed improvements to their local roadways."

The roads set to be addressed provide access to more than 80 homes and three businesses.

"I'm pleased to see these funds going towards road resurfacing in Liberty," said Rep. Daniel Elliott. "This investment goes a long way in making roads smoother and safer for the folks who travel them and benefit the entire community. Improving our roads and infrastructure is a big priority for me. After all, they provide us access to health care, education, and jobs."

The Liberty City Council is responsible for administering the work, and KYTC will reimburse the county for the projects.

Resurfacing work will address:

  • Carmicle Street (City Street 1012) – resurfacing 0.185 miles
  • Fair Street (City Street 1020) – resurfacing 0.330 miles
  • Wolford Avenue (City Street 1059) – resurfacing 0.410 miles
