Preventative maintenance work to begin on KY 2310 in Casey County

SOMERSET, Ky. (May 16, 2018)The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) recently awarded a contract for a preventative maintenance project on KY 2310 (River Road) in Casey County. This project involves application of a cost-effective treatment, known as scrub seal, to extend the life of the pavement.

Work will be performed starting at the Adair/Casey County line (mile point 0) and end at mile point 2 (east of Creek Road). During these operations the roadway will be reduced to one lane with traffic controlled by flaggers.

Scrub seal is an application of a chip and seal, followed by a light layer of oil, commonly known as a fog seal. The chip seal begins with an asphalt emulsion sprayed on the roadway followed by a layer of coarse stone spread evenly over the emulsion. This portion of the application is left in place for a few days to allow the stone to set. After the curing period, the fog seal is sprayed to further lock the aggregate into the pavement.

Motorists are advised that during the process they will encounter a loose rock surface and for that reason speed limits will be reduced to 25 mph.

The project is scheduled to begin the week of May 28. Work is expected to be completed in approximately four weeks. The starting date and duration of work may be adjusted for inclement weather or other unforeseeable delays. Drivers should expect delays and are encouraged to allow extra time in reaching their destination.
