Widening to begin on the remaining portion of Interstate 75 in Rockcastle County this weekend

SOMERSET, Ky. (Feb. 15, 2018) – Motorists traveling on Interstate 75 in Rockcastle County will soon notice the extension of orange barrels as crews are set to begin construction this weekend to widen the remaining nine-mile section of roadway.

The $80.9 million project, set to begin Sunday, Feb. 18, will widen the section of I-75 at mile points 55.7 to 64.5 in both directions from four lanes to six lanes.

On Sunday, traffic will be reduced to one lane, both north and south bound, between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST as crews begin milling and laying asphalt on the outside shoulders. Traffic will be shifted to the two outside lanes once the shoulders have been paved.

Speed limits in the work zone will be reduced from 70 to 55 mph.

This project also includes the replacement of two overpasses at U.S. 25 and KY 2793 (Lake Linville Road). The construction of the new overpasses will transpire next to the current overpass, resulting in a minimal impact to traffic. Both structures are scheduled to begin construction later this year.

L-M Asphalt Partners LTC., d/b/a ATS Construction, of Lexington was awarded the $80 million contract. The anticipated completion for the project is October 2020.

The starting date and duration of work may be adjusted for inclement weather or other unforeseeable delays. Motorists can access travel and traffic conditions at http://goky.ky.gov or contribute their own reports at www.waze.com or via the Waze mobile application.
